Democratic standards worldwide improved slightly in 2022 after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, but plummeted further in Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) said on Thursday. Overall, less than half — 45.3% — of the world's population is living in a democracy, the London-based analysis group said. "More than a third of the world's population — 36.9% — live under authoritarian rule, a large share of which are in China and Russia," the EIU said, as it published its annual Democracy Index. A little under 8% live in a "full democracy" in a group of more than 20 countries such as Canada, Sweden and Uruguay. "Following its invasion of Ukraine, Russia's score showed the most dramatic drop of any country in the world," the analysis group said. Russian authorities have been waging an unprecedented media and opposition crackdown since President Vladimir Putin sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022. "Russia has been on a trajectory away from democracy for a long time and is now acquiring many of the features of a dictatorship," the EIU said.

Russia has transformed from being a flawed quasi-democratic state to being an authoritarian state.

I never would have labeled Putin's Russia a quasi-democratic state. It was a democracy in name only, although maybe some of the Duma and local office seats were more competitive. But the executive power order long ago built up an impenetrable wall around it.

Putin probably saw the day coming when he would have to take a weakened democracy and turn it into a de facto dictatorship, and indeed, that appears to be what he's doing now.

Well then, with all of Zelensky's dictatorial actions, he and Putin should sit down and compare notes. I'm sure they could both learn things from each other on how to become better dictators.

Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian parliament were elected without much comlaint by the 16,000 Western monitors who observed the national elections in 2019.

Try harder Mycroft.

Hitler was also elected. So that is not a good argument. Zelensky has since moved on to ban opposition media, arrested opposition media, and has now turned loose jackboots on nuns, priests and monks.

These people you are referencing are ethnic Russians who are working on behalf of the Russian government. They are traitors and they can go **** themselves.

Abraham Lincoln did similar things during the civil war.

The last opinion poll I saw showed Zelenskyy has a 90 percent approval rating.

He has the full support of the Ukrainian people.

If Zelensky were removed from power anyone who took his place would do the exact same things.

If there was no Ukrainian President at all the Ukrainians would continue to fight Russia.

Your pathetic smears against Ukraine are nothing more than Russian propaganda.

It’s disgusting how you favor Putin over the West.

You make my case. Demonisation is a handy tool for aspiring dictators like Zelensky. His Ukraine is only for the Bandera crowd, Russians are verboten

Lincoln did similar things during the civil war. Complain all you want. Ukraine is going to win. And Zelensky’s actions are appropriate considering the circumstances.

And I know you’ve seen my posts indicating the dismal support the far right parties received in 2019 in Ukraine, receiving less than 3% of the vote.

Stop spreading Russian propaganda. It’s disgusting.

The bottom line is people like Mycroft and Juin hate democracy. That’s why they love the “strongman” Putin.
I think you give mycroft credit for a depth of thought that doesn't actually exist. He adopts a position at first glance, with little to no information, and then clings to it forever. We all know exactly what criteria he uses. It all goes back to the orange slob.

And his contemporaries took issues with him over that.

Ukraine cannot win. Ukraine/Nato may win, but that depends on how much the Nato/Eu part of the gang is prepared to invest. Russia may also win.

Zelensky is a monster. That's the least that can be said of a scroundrel who violates the sanctity of centuries old monasteries and churches.

You champion the cause of adulators of Nazi collaborator and genocide participant Stepan Bandera, and you point the finger?

What a bizarre troll question. Flesh out your point.

I didn't say anything about removing anyone from power. I didn't say anything about whether the Ukrainian people like the guy or not. I didn't say anything that was a smear against Ukraine. And I didn't say anything that showed favor to Putin.

Guess what...that means your entire comment is useless, irrelevant and wrong.

Bye.

And his contemporaries took issues with him over that.

You mean Southern sympathizers, confederate shills, and traitors took issue with him over that.

Ukraine cannot win.

Ukraine already won. Putin tried to conquer all of Ukraine and failed miserably. Ukraine will always be a sovereign, western country that is free from the grasp of the evil Russian empire.

The question now is how much it’s territory can it liberate.

Russia may also win.

Russia will not win. It already lost. Now it’s just a question of how much more it will lose.

It’s initial plans we’re thwarted and now they will have to settle for some minor territorial gains beyond their 2014 invasion of Crimea and Donbas.

Zelensky is a monster. That's the least that can be said of a scroundrel who violates the sanctity of centuries old monasteries and churches.

Zelenskyy is a hero. He is a beacon of hope for freedom and democracy. He is a brilliant, inspiring example of the eternal fight against the despotism the piece of shit Putin represents.

And the Russians can go **** themselves they are the ones engaging in sacrilege by abusing the privileges afforded to their churches for evil, political and military gains.

Shocked that you take Russia’s side in everything. It’s anti American as far as I’m concerned. You must really hate the West and Democracy.

In the 2019 election the far right parties in Ukraine got no more than 3 percent of the vote. So when you are trying to smear Ukraine by accusing them of being Neo Nazis all you’re doing is revealing yourself to be Russian shill who is mindlessly parroting Putin’s propaganda about Ukraine.

You’re lying about them. It’s not okay. It’s not okay to lie.

russia is a dictatorship.
