RT - Russia’s military doctrine remains ‘solely defensive’ – Putin

December 19, 2014

Russia is going to maintain its security “consistently and rigorously,” President Vladimir Putin has said. And despite NATO’s military buildup close to Russian borders, the national military doctrine will remain solely defensive, he said. “Our military doctrine does not change despite all odds. It has, as is well known, an exclusively defensive character, but we’re going to assert our security consistently and rigorously,” Putin said.

Utter rubbish. Ukraine is not a part of the Russian Federation. Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk are aggressive Russian military operations beyond its borders.

So ****ing what...

We tell the world our military interests are all about spreading peace and freedoms. Yet since the inception of this nation we have been in conflict with someone for more years than we have not. Seriously, go look it up.

And to the OP point, Ukraine has plenty of culpability as to why there are so many problems today. These parts of Ukraine contain people who seem more interested in working with Russia, than staying with a government that ideologically and even somewhat economically isolated them.

I believe it refers to the USA PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE policy. The Pentagon has officially stated that a pre-emptive strike on any Nation is a legitimate OFFICIAL policy. Many Nations, including Russia, take umbrage to that policy. The USA has bombed 40 countries and has over 140 overseas bases in mostly countries with heavily extractive industries. The Empire/USA attempts to control International Banking for Imperialistic misadventures. I believe any Nation has a right to defend against COVERT military/economic aggression and I see a lot of that emanating from the USA. It is good judgement to build a defense against PRE-EMPTIVE military policy when the control freaks have an imperialistic agenda, don't you think?

Ukraine certainly didn't invite Russian forces into Crimea or eastern Ukraine.

These parts of Ukraine contain people who seem more interested in working with Russia,
In a democracy, the majority rules. The vast majority of Ukrainians have overwhelmingly decided (via the vote) to align with Europe. The rebels failed to take into account economic realities. Many nearsighted people employed in the Donetsk/Luhansk rust belt legacy industries mistakenly believed that Russia would spend billions of rubles to preserve their antiquated industrial sectors and save their jobs. That isn't going to happen. Now they are stuck in an economic no-mans land. Ukraine won't subsidize the rebellion, Russia can't afford to bail them out financially, and foreign lenders won't inject/invest any funding until all legal issues are resolved.

than staying with a government that ideologically and even somewhat economically isolated them.
Ukraine had granted these regions greater autonomy and language protections. The rebels refused any compromise other than total independence. Rather than continue the warfare that has claimed nearly 5,000 lives, Ukraine has decided to honor the Minsk Ceasefire Agreement and to cease financially subsidizing these breakaway regions. Now the rebels are entirely responsible for managing their broken and broke fiefdoms without any interference from Kyiv. They got exactly what they demanded. I do feel sorry for the countless thousands of Ukrainians in Donetsk/Luhansk who never wanted separation and who are now stuck in these economic sinkholes.
