What to watch for on Tuesday - first meeting between Prime Minister Carney and President Trump:

1. How PM Carney will be greeted when he arrives. Remember Trudeau was kept waiting for several minutes outside, in his car.
2. The first handshake.
3. If Vance is present, like in the Zelenski press conference meeting - will he do the offensive and be the pitbull of Trump, as he did with Zelenski?
4. Body language.
5. Achievement.

Your thoughts?

Trump has already been very complimentary to Carney referring to him as "a very nice gentleman" and saying "he couldn't have been nicer" during their phone call.

He hasn't made a negative comment about Carney.

I expect Carney to get a greeting similar to that received by the Irish, Italian etc leaders.

This BTW is not true. As is usually the case Trump was waiting as the car carrying Trudeau pulled up.

It's pretty clear Donnie Boy's gripe with Trudeau was purely personal, and given his social media diet, I'm sure he saw many of the memes about Melania and Trudeau. I think it was that basic. In Carney, you have someone without that baggage and is a disciplined communicator, so I expect he will be treated better.

Trump keeps everyone but Putin and Kim waiting.
Vance will be there as Trump's vicious dog in drag.

Let's not be too quick to assume that complimentary statements................................ doesn't come with daggers in the end.
For all we know - Trump could be "priming" Carney before he starts cutting him up.

Or, things might be good between them right now, but if Carney doesn't play ball with Trump - how will Trump react?
Look what happened to Zelensky in that famous press conference which shocked the world!

Btw....

It wasn't too long ago, when we were swooning with appreciation over nice things that were said.
It made us forget that they'd kept Trudeau waiting in his car for many minutes.

Roll back to 2017:

President Donald Trump:
Prime Minister Trudeau, on behalf of all Americans, I thank you for being with us today. It is my honour to host such a great friend, neighbour and ally at the White House, a very special place.

This year, Canada celebrates the 150th year of Confederation. For Americans, this is one of the many milestones in our friendship and we look forward — very much forward, I must say — to many more to come.

Prime Minister, I pledge to work with you in pursuit of our many shared interests. This includes a stronger trading relationship between the United States and Canada. It includes safe, efficient and responsible cross-border travel and migration. And it includes close partnership on domestic and international security.

America is deeply fortunate to have a neighbour like Canada. We have before us the opportunity to build even more bridges — bridges of co-operation and bridges of commerce.
Both of us are committed to bringing greater prosperity and opportunity to our people.

Mr. Prime Minister, I look forward to working closely with you to build upon our very historic friendship. There are incredible possibilities for us to pursue, Canada and the United States together.

His anger on Trudeau stems from the insults Trudeau had lobbied on Trump.
I must say, Trudeau did a lot of drive-by shooting on Trump..................even during the primary election in 2016.
I posted a news clip a while back, enumerating the insults that he did.

Most of Trudeau's hit were what some of us women would characterize as, "bitchy" remarks.
Of course, Trump would know of those. His campaign staff, his people who monitor social media and the happenings in other nations, will keep him informed.

He didn't keep this guy waiting: NETANYAHU. :giggle:

If Trump has a buddy among nations' leaders..................I'd say, it'll be Netanyahu.

I can't remember if Putin or Kim Jong Un had actually visited the White House.
I know North Korea had accepted an invitation when they met at a summmit.............but I'm not sure if the visit had actually happened.

You're posting on a political forum and you can't remember if Putin or the leader of North Korea visited the White House????

Seriously?

The one thing we know about Trump with no degree of doubt is he can dish it but can't take it. His thin skin and pettiness is legendary.

Right, and as a leader of a country like the US, one would think a person in that position would rise above. Some do, some don't, and others fail miserably.
:)

And?

Unless we got the upper hand................and we're not the one begging..............or, maybe we can just drop ALL trade with the USA?
Out of pride.

What say you?

One thing I know - Trudeau got into the gutter.
He paid for it.

We never know how folks would react.
I don't think our opinion of people - especially those who are in power - would count at all.
Let's not kid ourselves.

What could happen?
Let's just review the ZELENSKI episode:

Sure, let's do that.

  • Trump leads the fiasco by introducing the supposed animus between Zelenskyy and Putin, which is naturally going to put Zelenskyy on the defensive because he's speaking for him.
  • Trump leans into all sorts of absurd posturing about how tough he can be.
  • Vance then decides to take the opportunity to try and make this about the Biden administration, despite the fact the Biden administration was able to unify Europe around the sanctions placed against Russia and helping arm Ukraine.
  • Trump gets the date of the Crimean invasion wrong, and in typical fashion tries to deflect responsibility.
  • Zelenskyy correctly points out to Vance Russia's actions which broke the ceasefire treaty. He then proceeds to ask Vance what kind of diplomacy is expected when Putin doesn't abide by the very agreements he signs.
  • Vance interrupts and then laughably tries to accuse Zelenskyy of trying "litigate this in front of the American media" when Vance is the one who was trying to frame a narrative incorrectly.
  • Vance continues to turn the press conference into a crap show by then trying to litigate Ukraine's internal issues.
The rest was a continuation of the shambolic ineptitude of both Vance and Trump.

And?

Unless we got the upper hand................and we're not the one begging..............or, maybe we can just drop ALL trade with the USA?
Out of pride.

What say you?
Wait, we're going from Trump's gripe to trade?

Ok, yet the fascinating turn of events is how the Liberals turned what was going to be a likely defeat into a victory all with Trump's help.
:)

We never know how folks would react.
I don't think our opinion of people - especially those who are in power - would count at all.
Let's not kid ourselves.
We don't, but we can expect certain behavior and we have the ability to choose who we put into positions of power.

I think the meeting will be fine. I think both will say nice things about it, but I think Trump will say nicer things and keep his comments pretty vague - like productive meeting, nice guy, etc.

I think Carney's comments will be nice but might contain a bit more about how Canada won't be taken advantage of and such. He's already shown that more dramatic angle to his personality in his recent speeches when he's talked about the relationship between the two countries. Leaders of other countries have kept their "feelings" more to themselves and waited to see this whole process play out a bit before being so reactionary.

After Tuesday, Bessent and team will tackle the Canada specific deal just as they are doing with many other countries. As far as timing, that's pretty hard to say since there are other countries with which they are currently well into those talks and they are certainly busy.

If Bessent and team reach what they consider a fair deal, Trump will decide if it meets his approval or not - just like with all the countries they are working with. If no satisfactory deal is reached, the U.S. will just set tariffs at a specific level and Canada can respond however they choose to.

I think a decent effort will be made to reach a deal with all countries we trade with but when not able to do so, tariffs will just be "set".

Trump has already mentioned this several times lately.

The guys who already have deals with 200 of the 195 countries in the world? Those guys?

I might be the only one on here recognizing the theme beyond the words used, namely, someone is gleefully anticipating that Trump will spank Carney and you might ask why someone would be gleefully looking forward to that.

Most of us are aware that there are those who disliked the Liberals or Carney and were rooting for Poilievre. Now this is their chance to see Carney taken down a notch. Of course folks like these are assuming had Poilievre won, Trump would not have taken him down a notch. Assumptions, you gotta love 'em.

The advantage Carney has is he appears to be a very professional and disciplined communicator. This should help in avoiding getting Trump's pettiness into the mix and they can focus on whatever it is Trump wants, since negotiators of other nations have expressed dismay at the lack of cohesion in the talks that have started.

These tariff/trade conversations with Canadians on the forum are I think (understandably) from two very different perspectives.

Canada is taking the whole situation very personally and reacting quite emotionally. It's like a U.S. "against" Canada discussion.

On the other hand, many Americans are seeing the U.S. working to bring all our trade scenarios with all our trading partners to a fair and balanced level. In that endeavor, Canada is only one component among a whole bunch.

So, to Canadians, the meeting on Tuesday is seen as a big deal. To Americans, it's a daily routine happening with many, many countries and people.

As far as spanking, owning, caving and all the rest of that stuff, that's just not my thing and I think it's all silly. Sometimes it takes days, months, or years to see and fully understand an outcome. And many an outcome doesn't even have a winner or a loser. Some of the best outcomes don't. Heck, think of a divorce - it represents a relationship that didn't survive the continuation of the marriage, but the better divorces are the ones that end with the least conflict and the least negative impacts on all the family members and future relationships for those family members.

200 deals so far!

Fantastic work.

Do you have any details on the deals made with the penguins, the Vatican, Palestinian territories, Saint Pierre and Miquelon (which the moron thinks is a country) and whatever deal America made with itself?

From what I can tell from Trump's description of his "deals"

Trump's "deals" are offers from Trump instead of agreements with other countries.
Trump has created 200 offers and is waiting on other countries to accept the offers or not
