Roll-Your-Own Cigarette Stores Pay Price For Encroaching On Big Tobacco's Turf
A rider is passing through Congress which will increase taxes on roll your own cigarette stores.
Talked about Pros:
-"The roll your own cigarette stores are a tax loophole," says Senators and Congressmen and Phillip Morris.
-We need taxes, got a budget problem.
-It's a bad addiction.
-My daddy died from smoking, screw Tobacco!
Talked about Cons:
-It's a regressive tax, poor people smoke more.
-It's just big Tobacco snuffing out the competition and stepping on the little guy.

What's not being talked about.
Big Tobacco Cigs have higher nicotine content, they soak paper in nicotine and then mix it in with the tobacco. So while roll your own cig stores might be half the cost they also probably only have half the nicotine, and if that's the case then this is just another case of Big Tobacco maintaining their market share because nobody is going to pay the same price for half the nicotine.
People smoking with these roll your own cigs are inadvertantly subjecting themselves to less nicotine, and therefore less addiction. In a way this new upstart industry helps stop smoking.
The government is like the mafia. The sue the tobacco manufacturers and take a huge chunk which they pass on to the users, and they tax the hell out of the products which are passed on to the users. Of course the tobacco companies arent going to suffer....they just keep increasing the charge for products. Its funny really....unless...well...you are a user.in texas and most areas roll you own cigarettes cost the same as normal cigarettes because they are already taxed to death.the current loophole now is they sell rolling tobacco as pipe tobacco since it is another taxe class.
when i started smoking cigarettes were 5 bucks a pack in cali and i was 14 at the time, roll your own brands were $1.10 under a different tax class.now it seems every form of tobacco now except cigarellos is being taxed to death,if not by federal its by state tax.it bummed me out when i could by a can of grizzy in fort jackson for $1.35 and when i got to fort hood it was $4 a can, when i deployed a pouch of beechnut was 4.50 or so and i just bought a pouch of levi garret a few days ago and it was $10,and the cheapest brand redman was $9,i just couldnt believe they doubled in price in a little over a year.
I know "roll your own cigs" have less nicotine, I don't get a buzz off of em, cause I smoke them.
Actually I quit for 7 months last year but didn't want to stay quit. I wanted to see if I could quit.
I feel myself getting closer to actually wanting to quit.
The desire for a cigarette isn't there, like it used to be.
But hell, I want to quit on my terms, not because taxes are raised to give the tobacco giants and edge of pricing, again.
Why are you blaming the cigarette companies? It's the govt that is levying taxes here. Then let the govt remove the taxes from everyone.

oh...And it's bipartisan.
Beware of the bipartisan. Another example of why a split government is not "better".
They lobbied for these tax increases, because they thought the difference in taxation was unfair.

They lobbied for $$$$$$, market share, not out of some noble code of honor for fairness.
Holy smokes.... I am liking and agreeing with a socialist. It seems like the only bipartisan movements are the ones to screw people over. Anything that increases someones liberties has to be fought for tooth and nail. But something to push people down? Everyone can get behind that!

Great points. The more government involvement, the worse what they are involved with becomes. If they were truly serious about the anti smoking, they would just pass a law making tobacco illegal. But, there ain't no tax windfall with that.People don't smoke because they like smoking, although their brain likes to tell them that. They smoke because they are addicted to nicotine and the nicotine causes autosuggestion in the brain that the smoker likes smoking, not that he is addicted to nicotine. It is sort of the same with the Gov't. Since the cigarette manufacturers organize the tax collections for them, then they become partners in the endeavor. Just like nukes. Just like gasoline. Just like electricity. It is simple Corporatism. Not capitalism. Keerist, look at farming, it's just big corporate and no small farmers. Small farmers have been regulated out of the business. SOP for the Corporate control on any market. Corporatism! Think!

For a tube injector, I recommend the Top-O-Matic.
We use the Top-O-Matic 2
Where do you get your tobacco from? I get mine from B&B.
We buy the "Good Stuff" brand from the Indian smoke shop...16.99 a pound. I know it's cheaper to buy on line, I just haven't done it yet. I buy the Premier tubes. We smoked Marlboro or Camels before switching. This ^ is every bit as good.
What does B&B sell that would be comparable to that brand?
