The eruption of a “supervolcano” hundreds of times more powerful than conventional volcanoes – with the potential to wipe out civilisation as we know it – is more likely than previously thought, a study has found.
An analysis of the molten rock within the dormant supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in the United States has revealed that an eruption is possible without any external trigger, scientists said.
Risk of supervolcano eruption big enough to 'affect the world' far greater than thought, scientists say - Science - News - The Independent
So what would be a "prepers" plan for this event?
Dr Perrillat said there are no known supervolcanoes that are in danger of erupting in the foreseeable future, and it would take at least a decade or so for the magma pressure within a caldera to build up to a point where an eruption is likely.
Funny how the killjoy in these kinds of articles is always the very last paragraph:
O dear god, ten years. **** none of us will even be around. Good point.

That's not what it said. Read it again.
Where do you live?
Yeah, it's the thing about science, all such papers have similar endings. It wasn't stated at the end as a refutation of the science just presented. So dismiss the body of the article if you will but the scientists found it worthy to present. Incase you think all science is bull**** anyway, in which case that's a whole other discussion.
You misread the whole article. 99% of the article described what supervolcanoes do, how they erupt, history of past explosions, what conditions would need to be met for it to explode, and only finished it up with "but it ain't gonna happen for a hell of long time." And that's because the article was alarmism. The writer wanted you to click on the scary sounding headline, and you did.
It would appear that it worked on you, too!
I have been reading studies on this caldera for years and I completely disagree with your characterization of the work. But it's probably the first time you've heard of it.
Breaking News!
Yellowstone is a super-volcano.
Yep, that's pretty much the article in a nutshell.
It's not breaking news.
Yeah, you got me there, but at least I could tell after reading it that it was manipulative sensationalism.
Of course not. Supervolcanoes, like any other end-of-the-world scenario, have been in the media forever.
When or if this happens the winds will either kill or not kill millions carrying the ash. It would also be a year of cold with the sun blocked out and no crops therefore no food to feed the animals. One estimate is 60 % of Americans would die. If there was ever a time to own a gun with lots of ammo it would be then.
Breaking news! Yellowstone isn't going to blow up!
There, now it's breaking news.
Yet!
just sayin

moving away?
Yeah, but where?
When it happens, we're ****ed for a while. What are you going to do? Move off the Earth?
