People have a body gender. Chromosones, sexual organs, etc. (with rare exceptions like hermaphrodites).
People's brains have a gender identity - where a person feels like a gender, thinks they are a gender. It's a brain function.
Most of the time, the body and gender identity are the same gender. Female body, female brain. But in a small percent of people, somehow, the brain gender does not match the body gender. Female body, brain of a male, for example.
This is a natural occurrence. It takes a bit of learning - reading the above - and your imagination to have some empathy for transgender people, imaging if your body was the other gender from what you think you are.
Some of the right things to do about transgender people are, learn the above; don't treat them like freaks or monsters or criminals; give them respect as people, which means recognizing the gender they prefer; try to be compassionate and caring and polite. Leave them be, to address things as they and medical people see fit. Don't parrot propaganda about 'gender dysphoria' and such ignorantly.
It shouldn't be hard to do the above. It's new to many people, it's surprising to people who don't understand it. but it shouldn't be too hard. And then you can stop letting right-wing propagandists manipulate you with the topic trying to bait you and push you to be hateful. You can keep your distance if you prefer.
