Republicans Can't Stomach A Taste Of Their Own Map Rigging Medicine

Tit for tat. Democrats can play their big gun CA first but in the end it's a losing battle for them because they already shot their wad stealth gerrymandering and they got no ammo left. When it becomes obvious to them, you'll see them whining to the courts about how unfair all this is.

Do you live in California? If so, are you okay with Newsom disregarding a law and a Commission that the citizens created...for political purposes?
(y)
You have a great handle of what is stake for the country with Newsom going around this law. I hope it comes back to bite him in his ass.

So why are you mad at Texas republicans who believe defeating democrats is the highest priority?
Who is mad?

This is just California responding.

Playing tbings at a zero sum game is how we got here. Thats not what america is about

House Speaker Mike Johnson—who supported the Texas redraw that could boot as many as five Democratic House members—said California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s planned redraw is "a slap in the face to Californians who overwhelmingly support the California Citizens Redistricting Commission."

“The NRCC is prepared to fight this illegal power grab in the courts and at the ballot box to stop Newsom in his tracks,” National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson said in a statement, accusing Newsom of “disenfranchising voters to prop up his Presidential ambitions.”

It doesn't appear that you understand what was already decided in CA. by ignoring an Independent Commission. It isn't like what's happened in Texas at all, but Newsom is hoping nobody notices or he's just plain stupid, or a combination of both.
He is attempting to get the CA. voters on his side by putting a proposition to ballot, ignoring California's independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and allow the Democratic controlled state legislature to redraw congressional district maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections.
Johnson is correct. It is a slap in the face to Californians who support the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. Don't want to hear anybody ever say Trump is a fascist when in fact, it's Newsom who is going around what's already been decided by an independent commission.

California isn't the only Blue state with Republican House seats. They can do it with all of them.

CA gained the independent commission through a ballot proposition. A new ballot proposition, Prop 50, is allowing voters to temporarily suspend the current commission. There is a set date for Prop 50 to end.

There is no slap in anyone’s face because the voters will be deciding if there will be a change, not Newsom, nor the legislature in Sacramento. The current commission came into being by appearing on a ballot, and the proposal for a temporary change is following the same process.

You only see Republicans attack California for their false issue of voter approval, while they say nothing about Texas actually forcing it through without voter approval.

I'll ask you why is a change even needed?

Only Newsom and those who think like him believe California Proposition 50, the "Election Rigging Response Act," is necessary to counter what he describes as a Republican-led effort, particularly in Texas.

Not a good enough reason because it's got PARTISANSHIP all over it.

Newsom likely isn't too worried about what MAGA believes he's done or hasn't done.

If Texas is going to engage in extreme gerrymandering, but MAGA doesn't like the fact California is going to follow suit, that's just what has already been pointed out: MAGA doesn't like getting a taste of its own medicine.

Too bad.

Here's some advice: Get used to having to suck it up. God knows, that's what non-trump supporters have had to do since 2016.

Thanks for the laugh, @trixare4kids.

?????

You have forgotten that the leader of the REPUBLICAN Party didn't want to "accept the result, win or lose" and tried to steal the 2016 election with his Jan 6 violence?

You've also forgotten that the same leader of the REPUBLICAN Party, who has spoken about "terminating the Constitution", is once again the POTUS and CinC?

Good god.

Texas PARTISANSHIP is the catalyst for Proposition 50.

Texas “election rigging” is what caught the eye of California state government.

The Texas action is certainly enough to trigger a response from other states in the country.

Schoolyard bullies tend to react badly to tit for tat.

Tough luck, MAGA.

To defeat a schoolyard bully you must either hurt him so badly he'll never forget it, or humiliate him.

I saw a kid let a much bigger kid punch himself to exhaustion, then walked away when the bully kind of collapsed.

NO ONE ever touched that kid again! The bully? He got bullied.

I thought that the highest priority was the preservation of our democracy and that each person's vote counting. Gerrymandering by either or both parties' harms both.

If this is what you want to go with then fine, but the GOP is in serious trouble at the moment. They started this, though. So they should have at least entertained the fact that it might blow up in their faces. It has started to already. :)

Let's see, California is letting the people vote on the issue and Texas is not, so who should get bitten in the ass?

If we want to preserve our democracy then we need to intercept a damned near-total authoritarian takeover by this administration first.

I mean let's be realistic here. We do NOT have time to wait 75 or 100 or more years (I'm guessing way, way more) for everyone to kumbaya the end of gerrymandering. Right now, we have, in fact, just about a year and three months to curtail ANY of this. This shit is NOT going to get any better from here on out. Jesus...look at where we are in just seven months. This Texas crap is just the lastest installment of the president of the United States OPENLY asking a state to get more seats for a PARTY win...right out in the open, he doesn't even need to hide it. At all. In just seven months.

You think we can spare a few more years of this?

We fight *right now.* Dems sitting back and going "Oh, maybe when they go low we should go high" and "Oh, but we don't want to make too many moves too quickly" have gotten us here. How many more decadess are we supposed to try that method? Until we have the United States of MAGA?

Hell no. You go ahead and go high while they go low. The rest of us are too busy trying to keep the U.S. as the U.S. to wax plaintively and prove what pacifists we are.

Can you tell me what you think what Texas did to start this gerrymandering shod be called? You seem to be interested in condemning California but not Texas. Sounds a lot like a MAGA message to me.

Gavin Newsom is attempting to temporarily suspend California's independent redistricting commission. The governor of TX. didn't go against an independent commission's decision. If you don't understand this, I can't help you.

Edited to add:
Btw, a Politico-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab poll conducted in August 2025 found that 64% of California voters prefer retaining the state’s independent redistricting commission, while only 36% support returning redistricting authority to lawmakers, as Newsom’s plan would temporarily do.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Trump orders the feds to patrol and conduct 'immigration' raids at certain voter polls on election day...you know, to "protect" democracy.
