As much as the National Republican Senatorial Committee would like Republicans to stay away from the abortion issue except to insist they are compassionate and caring about life, it isn't really working. There is little hope of eliding the consequences of their decades-long crusade to send women back to back-alley butchers. Nonetheless, they are haplessly trying to pretend that they are truly committed to helping all the people who will be forced to give birth against their will once the right to abortion is overturned. It's not credible: According to the National Women's Law Center, Mississippi has the highest poverty rate for women in the nation, one of the highest uninsurance rates for women in the nation and ranks last in the country for women's and children's health outcomes. If they revere life so much, why have they been punishing the poor women and children in their state who chose not to get abortions for the past 50 years? When Republican House leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said that removing exemptions for rape and incest simply went too far, "at least 11 US states – including Alabama, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas – have passed legislation that bans abortion without any such exceptions." The idea has taken off like wildfire.

And as much as they insist that they aren't coming for contraception — they're coming for contraception. Governors and statehouses are already passing draconian laws, testing novel new legal theories and pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable even two years ago. Yet Republicans have been all over social media and cable news over the last week insisting that Democrats are being overwrought in their reaction, that they aren't going to see much change in the status quo and everyone just needs to calm down. But as you can see, the status quo is changing very, very quickly. Ladies! The Republican Party has some surprises in store for for you. You probably already know about the GOP state bans on abortion. The Republicns will make you remain pregnant no matter the circumstances. No abortions even for rape and incest. Next in thier surprise bucket will be bans on contraceptives. No more IUD's or birth control pills. Another surprise for you ..... some Republican state legislatures are even thinking about criminalizing miscarriages. Who knows, Republicans may then also take a page from Putin's Russia and decriminalize sexual/spousal abuse. Remember all of these spiffy surprises the Republicans have in store for you when you enter the voting booth this November.

Even if I were still of a child bearing age, I don't think I would have any, in this country at this time.

I regret that my poor sons are living in this sick country right now. I also regret voting for and supporting the Republicans all those years. They are what makes this country sick.

You likely wouldn't have any choice in the matter.

It 'd be nice to see anyone that's registered as a republican and doesn't support this shit re-register as at least an independent. That might shake the party up a little.

Yes like SC justice Thomas just said..the Republicans are becoming addicted to particular outcomes and not living with outcomes they don't like. They spent decades packing the court with justices that would repeal Roe instead of living with the fact that abortions are a part of life like it or not and outlawing them just causes women to seek unsafe abortions. A rash of women hospitalized and dead from "lysol" abortion attempts was a big factor in the Roe decision. The Conservative judges that gave us Roe did not like abortions but they realized that the damage unsafe abortions were doing to living breathing humans was unacceptable and preventable.

"We are becoming addicted to wanting particular outcomes, not living with the outcomes we don't like," Thomas said.

As important and divisive as RvW is, wouldn't it be better for democracy to send this issue to the voters? I mean, we are a representative republic. We elect officials to represent our state. They debate on the issues, the ones with the most support win the day, and the right in question is codified into law. Something that is so critical to so many people shouldn't be decided by 9 partisans in robes.

Three fine specimens of manhood there, it's like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Cancun Ted looks like he is in the third trimester.

Precisely who is pushing for restrictions on contraception? The OP quote said some things about "testing legal theories". It did not provide evidence that any significant political faction is pushing to ban contraception, apart from abortifacients.

Human rights should not be subject to a vote. There are times the government should protect those who can't protect themselves from an angry mob

Republican moms gon luv dat.

At this rate there is gonna be like 7 young women who still wanna go to church.

Why wouldn’t the GOP push reactionary politics?
-Majority of the state legislatures are controlled by their party
-Majority of justices share their ideology

But nothing lasts forever. If it did blacks/women wouldn't be voting.

The issue is we all want instant political gratification when it takes years and a lot of hard ****ing work.

No doubt, but the deck is stacked. Red state legislatures can pass legislation knowing that a six person majority will likely support their position.

this is just fearmongering from Salon. There is no indication anywhere, that any republican legislature is "coming for birth control".

For the moment.

I bet more liberal people couldn't wait for the SCJs in the 40s and 50s to pass on.
