Trump can be a little confusing.

On the one hand, he loves to make ridiculous statements and revel in watching his supporters defend them. He might seek retribution against those who don't.

On the other hand, he loves filling the airspace with outlandish claims that aren't intended to measure the devotion of his flock but have the very specific purpose of frustrating the public's understanding of what is fact and what is fiction. In those cases, he doesnt care how his flock responds. A mixed response contributes the the muddying the waters, so it's actually helpful.

I think that is probably the case here. Although it's probably as safe bet that Trump will back Crazy Mace anyway.

I know as a voter, I always love it when a politician tells me inflation is good for me. It makes my ballot decision much easier.
