Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of its Windows Paint program and the Publisher portion of Microsoft Office. I have used Paint to edit, resize, and save images in a different format. I have used Publisher to create covers for eBooks.

Can anyone recommend replacements, preferably free, for these programs? I prefer something simple. I don’t need all the bells and whistles that a professional artist might want.

I will likely load them only after I get a new computer this Fall, or maybe later if Microsoft offers, at a price, extended support for Windows 10.

I never opened either. Can't help.

Don't know about Publisher, but I've used Paint.NET for years for basic image tasks...

For more complex tasks, try GIMP...

I asked the AI and it said that LibreOffice.Org's closest equivalent is Draw, which can open .pub files, but that Scribus.Net is better.

I use GIMP for all my drawing and editing needs. Its free

Procreate for tablets is great too.

Gimp.... shudder. I know they have been working hard on improving it but it's Gimp......

Photopea is free and does all of that. It's online so it doesn't matter what OS you are using. Similarly, you can use Pixlr or PhotoScape X for fairly straightforward image editing.

Because of the success of these free programs, Adobe now offers simpler free online versions of Adobe tools to edit photos and videos. Just set up an Adobe account but this means they will try and sell you on the full versions of the software.

Scribus is your tool - even opens Publisher files. Worst case scenario - LibreOffice will also do this.

If you're on a Mac - you get Pages free and Preview is a basic image editor but I would tend to go with an online tool like Photopea - especially if you have any familiarity with Photoshop.

Thank you for that information.
