The great green wall from Senegal to Kenya is being built slowly and steadily but this looks like it will work. I've personally seen some of the previous attempts (importing Eucalyptus trees) that actually made things worse but this actually looks like it will be a success.

Planting olive groves is in some of the plans. They live thousands of years and their roots help distribute and retain water in the soil. Eucalypus trees suck it out and waste it in transpiration.

I think date palms and a few other trees are part of those plans as well.
