That's what most libertarians are. Conservatives in denial.
Every time I see someone flying a Gadson flag and then the thin blue line flag bellow it I lose a year off my life expectancy. I recon I have a few years left to live.
Conservatives: "pull yourself up by your bootstraps! Nothing is free! You want free college? Join the military!"We just need to infiltrate police departments with LGBTQ+ folks and the right will turn on them in a flash, just as they did with the military.
I mean, if we look at 98% of human history/existence especially before the agricultural revolution, societies have been pretty dang socialist.
Except libertarianism was originally a term associated with the anti-state socialists/communists/anarchists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The term was co-opted by right-wing Americans during the 20th century.
Libertarianism originated as a form of left-wing politics such as anti-authoritarian and anti-state socialists like anarchists,[6] especially social anarchists,[7] but more generally libertarian communists/Marxists and libertarian socialists.[8][9] These libertarians seek to abolish capitalism and private ownership of the means of production, or else to restrict their purview or effects to usufruct property norms, in favor of common or cooperative ownership and management, viewing private property as a barrier to freedom and liberty.[14] Left-libertarian[20] ideologies include anarchist schools of thought, alongside many other anti-paternalist and New Left schools of thought centered around economic egalitarianism as well as geolibertarianism, green politics, market-oriented left-libertarianism and the Steiner–Vallentyne school.[24]
Apologies. As usual, I never have any idea what thread I'm on.This isn’t really the thread for this, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of opportunity elsewhere in the future.
Thank you.

Yup, typical modern GOP who jumps to the immediate authoritarian conclusion.
And welcome!
Refugee from another another "discussion" site, didn't notice this forum when I signed up last weekend. Became an Ivory Tower Libertarian in College, called myself a Pragmatic Religious Libertarian for years as Real Life ground away at the edges, until I've recently admitted I've turned into a (mostly) Conservative.

Given your user name, I can comment that IMO Libertarianism is a common college-aged 'guy thing'. It was foe me then, and I hang on to a few principles still - but have jettisoned the rest.
You are making progress, and that is good.
Before too long, you may evolve further and become a Liberal.
I suspect that what happens to most regardless of your “-ism” in college—you learn that life isn’t black-and-white, and the political principles of whatever -ism you follow become more like suggestions.
Reportedly (though probably falsely), according to Churchill the evolution goes the opposite direction.

Not going to drone on and on, the main bullet point here is that I personally am developing the exact opposite of what Churchill said. Mileage may vary.
And it sucked.I mean, if we look at 98% of human history/existence especially before the agricultural revolution, societies have been pretty dang socialist.
I've stayed pretty much the same, but I like the way you stated that.I have heard that said many times.
"You're a liberal when you're young and more conservative as you get older.", variations on that theme.
For me, it has been the exact opposite of that. When I was young I bought into all the "conservative" capitalist talking points. I was a cruel person at that stage of life. My sense of empathy was slow to develop.
As I grow older, I become more liberal. And I mean LIBERAL liberal, not a Neo-liberal anarchist cop-hating punk, not like that. But also I have come to understand over time that the vast majority of us humans want very similar things, with lots of common ground. With social media and all I think the wing nuts have hijacked a lot of the attention, and then these folks are pushed in the media as to being representative of the majority which they are not.
