(CNSNews.com) - A record 55,553,000 women 16 years and older did not participate in the labor force in September, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This means that 55,553,000 women in the United States did not have a job and did not actively seek one in the past four weeks.

The number of women not in the labor force increased from 55,345,000 in August to 55,553,000 in September, an increase of 208,000.

The participation rate for women also dipped in September to 56.7 percent; it has not been this low since September of 1988 when it was 56.6 percent. This means that only 56.7 percent of women participated in the labor force by either having a job during the month or actively seeking one.

Do you have the number for men?

As folks live longer (and more stay in HS or go to college) that number will drop from times when that was not the case. Do you find it odd that the elderly (or students) do not work or seek work?

Maybe the masses were on maternity leave

Egg Zachary. It could be this is simply the result of a record number of PEOPLE being out of work. But of course, we have to turn this into a national PC emergency regardless.

Yes, it was rather tongue in cheek of me to ask about the men. I was thinking of Blacks or Persons of Vietnamese provenance but decided that it would be politically incorrect to bring them up as a contrast to female unemployment.

It COULD be ... but it isn't ... see the reference.

Why work? They are the victors of the war on women remember....45 million on food stamps, nearly 110 million on some form of govt payment plan incl 21 million students....lots of women have won the war and are entitled to your money with their govt taking it from you.

For a broader perspective

Men have been slowly leaving the workforce since around 1960.

The reason the labor force participation rate was growing all those years was because women were entering the workforce. (Something, we should remember, conservatives were opposing for a few decades.)

Women have been leaving the workforce since 2001.
