NEW YORK — Days after winning his mayoral primary last year, Eric Adams declared ambitions to play a national role in the Democratic Party. Now, 10 months into his first year as mayor, he’s been thrust into the position he coveted — but not for the reason he’d hoped.

Adams’ city is buckling under pressure to accommodate tens of thousands of Latin American asylum-seekers — many bused here by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who is making a public show of sending border-crossers to New York, Washington and Chicago.

It’s also isolated the moderate Democrat mayor, whose political allies are piling on while he’s at war with the GOP and liberal critics protesting his every move.

On Oct. 10, 2022, the census indicated that 62,174 individuals were in the NYC shelter system. The number does not include certain subcategories of the DHS such as Safe Havens.

“The increase in the shelter census is fueled by rising numbers of people entering the system, by bureaucratic bottlenecks precluding residents from transitioning into permanent and safe affordable housing quickly, and, most notably, by the City’s continued failure to create anywhere near enough affordable housing for the New Yorkers who need it most,” said the Legal Aid Society and Coalition for the Homeless on Oct. 12. “The average length of stay in DHS shelters has risen to all-time highs, with single adults spending an average of 509 days in shelters, families with minor children spending 534 days, and adult families spending a staggering 855 days.”

Both organizations said that New York City Mayor Eric Adams needs to take definitive and swift action to move homeless New Yorkers into permanent housing – starting by accelerating the housing placement process.

62,000 isn't even 1% of the total population of NYC
lets see NYC has 8,8 MILLION people and 88000 would be 1 % and you are talking 62,000?
I have not done the research but I would venture to say there are a lot of other cities that have a larger percentage of their population in shelters then NYC has.

the Dens wanted to put something like 26 Billion dollars in the budget back in 2017 to build the wall IF McConnell and the Republicans would work with them on the Dreamer / Birther issue and McConnell said NO , and basically it was because it would make the Dems look good because they were doing something good for the country and McConnell couldn't let that happen
so NOW the Republicans are putting all the blame on the Dems and NOT admitting McConnell and the Republicans were the ones that screwed everything up

I wonder if migrants were bused to Montana in similar fashion whether that state would be dealing with issues as well. NYC has to deal with illegal immigration through visa overstays versus migrants arriving en masse, so how that's managed is more spread out than border states. What compounds the shelter crisis right now is the increase in people priced out of housing as the rents continue to rise quickly.

That wasn't the point; it's a question of a state's ability to deal with an issue compared to another that might not be in the same manner. I wouldn't expect Vermont to be the best prepared state for hurricane preparedness and response the way I would Gulf of Mexico states.
