Chanting "death to America," hundreds of protesters angered by an anti-Islam film stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Yemen's capital and burned the American flag on Thursday, the latest in a series of attacks on American diplomatic missions in the Middle East.
The protesters breached the usually tight security around the embassy and reached the compound grounds but did not enter the main building housing the offices. Once inside the compound, they brought down the U.S. flag, burned it and replaced it with a black banner bearing Islam's declaration of faith - "There is no God but Allah."
Young demonstrators shouting "we redeem, Messenger of God" smashed windows of the security offices outside the embassy with stones and burned cars before breaking through the main gate of the heavily fortified compound in eastern Sanaa. Others held aloft banners declaring 'Allah is Greatest'.
"We can see a fire inside the compound and security forces are firing in the air.
Well, the US has been bombing Yemen for some time now. I'd hardly expect them to be throwing the US a ticker-tape parade.
US bombs Yemen in secret
Yes how dare these persants protest against US war crimes and the theft of their natural resources to US corporatism
Except that's now what they're protesting about.
They're losing their toys over a film that embassy staff and the government of the United States had nothing to do with.
It's unacceptable and if I were in charge I'd begin evacuating first of all non-essential personal from all embassies and missions across the middle east and then all essential staff at Embassies and missions across the middle east in nations where the governments cannot give reasonable assurance that their embassies will be protected.

It is one of the fundamental principles that almost 100% of nations agree upon.
That embassies are not fair game for ANY REASON.
Now... Unlike some people who are going to turn this whole thing in Libya, Egypt and Yemen into a pissing match about how violent muslims are, that too is bull**** and should not even come into the conversation.

Of course it's unacceptable, but it is explicable, and it has very little to do with a YouTube movie. That is being used by both sides as a smokescreen for opposition to US influence and actions in the region.
Agree that the killings are unacceptable and criminal.
Just like the 1.42 million Iraqi civilian deaths since the USA invaded in 2003.
Are civilians fair game or is it just embassies that concern the direction of your moral compass?

Did you forget Tunisia and Morroco. You do know they are protesting at our Embassies there as well. Just which Muslims are you directing others to look at.....that are non-violent?
At the end of the day I agree to a point.
The problem that you have on the ground is, some old fella with alot of influence over young folks is using this youtube video to send poor, uneducated (in the case of libya, armed) young men into a frenzy.
What alot of right wingers keep failing to understand about attacks like this, 9/11 and various other terrorist actions is that regardless of the method in which young men were convinced to carry them out... it's goals are purely political.
Quite. That's how demagoguery works, the rich and/or powerful always send someone else to die for their cause, and it's usually the young, poor and alienated. At the end of the day I agree to a point.

Exactly. These groups are those who do not buy into what they see as western ideas of the rule of law and the democratic process. They want power and are willing to use whatever methods work to get it.What alot of right wingers keep failing to understand about attacks like this, 9/11 and various other terrorist actions is that regardless of the method in which young men were convinced to carry them out... it's goals are purely political.
If you want to turn this into a pissing match about muslims being violent, go ahead.
But reality does not support that assertion.
Good thing we aren't like the Russians......Where they have no problem removing the Problems of the Ignorant and Deluded off the Planet Permanently.
Hey man I agree, but what I will not agree that two wrongs make a right.
This is a conversation about embassy safety in general.
If one embassy attack is condoned, no embassy is safe and international diplomacy would break down.
The sanctity of embassy protection is a universal principle that I will not ever support breaking under any circumstances... even as much as I hate say the North Korean regime, I will never support their embassy being attacked in any nation around the world.
Oh no.....I was waiting for you to show me all thes Peaceful Loving Muslims. Got any groups in mind. What countries do these peaceful Muslim walk around preaching about Peace and talking about how they are not tied to the rest of the Muslims throughout the World.
Provide 3 main examples that support your view of what the Russians are like!
Surely youre not caliming that the Russians are invading other nations, stealing their resources on behalf of their corporations and using drones to carry out summary illegal executions? (I wonder who does that in the world?)
Did you need the 3 examples of Ethnic Cleanising by the Russians or is it you are not familiar with history and what the Russians have done?
Well first.....wouldnt the Educated have to tell and teach the Uneducated. Just exactly what a resource is in their country. I mean if it wasn't for others explaining what resources are. Do you think the ignorant, uneducated, and deluded would even ever figure it out? How many more hundreds or thousands of years do you think it would take those that have to be told how to breathe and walk. To figure things out?
I've been at DP for many years, and I have no interest in having this conversation with you.
You're convinced that people by the very virtue of their religion are violent and nothing is going to change that for you, you've made up your mind and in my experience nothing I can say is going to make you think otherwise.
These folks that carried out these actions don't represent all Islam, just like abortion clinic bombers or the Westboro Baptist Church don't represent Christians etc...
You can take this as a sign of weakness, but arguing with you about this subject is like talking to a dining room table, I have no interest in it.
