I can't even imagine the break from reality required to shoot a baby. What a horrific tragedy.

From the New York Post:

A prominent New York City cancer doctor killed herself and her baby at their Westchester home Saturday morning in what police believe was a murder-suicide, reports said.

Dr. Krystal Cascetta, 40, a Hematology-Oncology specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 7 am after apparently shooting her child, according to ABC 7.

...The incident happened at her home in Somers, a $1 million house she shared with her husband, 37-year-old Tim Talty, according to the Daily Mail.

Very very sad indeed. Yesterday I watched an interview with Dr. Lena Wyn, an ER doctor and contributor on CNN. She was talking about the devastating effects of post partum depression. She suffered from it herself 6 years ago, and admitted waiting way to long to seek help for it. Didn't see the beginning of the interview, now I'm wondering if it was about this story. She was talking about how doctors are often the worst patients when it comes to their own care. What a horrible waste of life and the loss of a brilliant medical doctor.

That’s just sad. 😔

Devastating story.

Mental health issues can touch anyone.
Even a highly trained medical doctor.

Help is there if you can ask for it!

Hematology-Oncology

Leukemia/blood cancers

That can get you down.

Yes, and there are the rare extreme cases such as Andrea Yates, but I think that some PPD goes undiagnosed and that it's more common than we used to understand.

I agree. I believe it goes largely undiagnosed because it's so contrary to the way society views the way mothers should behave and feel. To admit struggling with feelings that don't fit into the "normal" box is too hard for many women to admit and it prevents them from seeking help. So sad.

Yes.

I wish I understood more about this tragedy. Was this mother so high-functioning that somehow her husband didn't notice? What about her family? And what about the murder method? Not a gentle death from some drug but, rather, shooting her baby? What could this poor soul have been thinking? Was she angry?

It 's very hard to understand the gun violence. Being a MD she would know it would be quick and painless. I suppose we will never know what the underlying circumstances were, but it's hard to believe that those around her would not have seen signs of her internal struggling. One of those very dark areas of human nature that we all want to understand and want to avoid at the same time.

Just awful. Possibly very bad post-partum depression.

The neighbors say that police and ambulances were called to the house 2-3 times this summer. Although the husband/father was not at home, the mother's parents were. Someone from inside the house called 9-1-1, so I assume it was one of them. Horrific. https://nypost.com/2023/08/06/cops-...t-twice-before-she-killed-baby-self-neighbor/
WOW, that's very telling. Apparently she was having serious ongoing problems. Reinforces the fact that this country has a completely broken mental health care system when no one was able to spot the warning signs. I really believe all first responders need extensive training in this area; 2-3 phone calls is in itself a huge red flag.

I feel so terribly sorry for her husband and parents, who are undoubtedly playing the "If only..." game now. I just wonder if she was so high-functioning that they simply couldn't believe that she wouldn't work all this out on her own. Still, cops being called 2-3 times was surely a heads-up.

That’s horrifying and sad. Can’t even imagine what her husband and other family members are going through right now.

How awful. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to force treatment on someone, even if you see the signs. What a tragedy.
