My first question is why is there a sneaker that cost $5,000?

Because people are insane.

In recent years, sneakers have become a high profile item and collectible. "Big Sneaker" (i.e. Nike, Adidas, Reebok etc) play into it, by artificially creating scarcity and hype with limited runs, and elaborate drop schedules and methods.

I.e. it's all about status. In order to get the super-rare sneakers, you need to be wealthy and often well connected.

The really odd thing about expensive sneakers is that the soles don't last. The polyurethane used for sneaker soles degrades over time, so if you actually try to wear those vintage $10,000 1995 Air Jordan kicks, the soles will crumble.
