.....Tell Critics to 'Go Fly a Kite'.

“In recent months, dozens of Southern and Midwestern law enforcement agencies have added the axiom to squad cars, usually to the vexation of vocal, often distant critics, and at the personal expense of sheriffs, police chiefs or rank-and-file employees,” The New York Times reports.

Some officials contend that their display of the motto is elementary patriotism, a four-word way of “standing up for America, standing up for our country,” Sheriff Moats said. Others in law enforcement say the stickers are a response to the battering their profession’s reputation has taken after more than a year of high-profile killings and extraordinary scrutiny. “With the dark cloud that law enforcement has been under recently, I think that we need to have a human persona on law enforcement,” said Sheriff Brian Duke of Henderson County, Tenn. “It gave us an opportunity to put something on our cars that said: ‘We are you. We’re not the big, bad police.’ ”

But critics, like the organization Freedom From Religious Foundation, argue they shouldn’t be allowed on government vehicles, despite the fact that the courts have repeatedly dismissed challenges to the motto. “After carefully reading your letter I must deny your request in the removal of our Nations [sic] motto from our patrol units,” Garcia responded in a letter, “and ask that you and the Freedom From Religion Foundation go fly a kite.” .....snip~

It shouldn't be there. If they are sued and it costs legal fees, the Police Chief should have to pay them.

What say ye?

It's the official motto of the United States by act of Congress.

I got no problem with it.

I wonder what they'll say when someone puts "In Allah we trust" on a police car?

Yep. I don't have a problem with it because "God" doesn't refer to any specific God. In the same way that "Allah" or "Elohim" don't refer to specific gods. However if it was switched to "In Allah we trust" you better believe these same people would be having conniptions.

Agreed, it should not be there. It is a step too close to sponsorship, the very thing our Constitution was designed to avoid.

Heya Maggie. Some have tried suing them.....the Anti God and anti religious. They just keep losing the battle.

In 1956 President Eisenhower signed a law that made “In God We Trust” the nation’s official motto. Two years prior he successfully sought to add “under God” to the country’s “Pledge of Allegiance.” Today, despite fervent efforts to completely separate church and state in America, reverence to God is still seen on our printed money, coins, and some state flags.

“If it’s on my money and it’s on the state flag, I can put it on a patrol car,” said Sheriff Johnny Moats, who encouraged sheriffs in Georgia this year to promote the motto’s placement on their official vehicles.....snip~ same link.

Ya' know, I've just got sooo many fish to fry. Have it. Don't have it. The only people it should weakly offend would be atheists. I wasn't aware it was formally made our country's motto, and thought it was already off our money.

While my curiosity wonders why, then, nativity scenes are banned, I won't be losing any sleep over it.

Best we focus on our presidents being able to bypass the legislative branch with exec orders, don't you think?

I don't see a problem, it's on our money.

Whether it is on the money, or is the motto is irrelevant.
Slavery was legal at one time but that didn't make it moral or right.

What is relevant is the context in which is being used.
The people who wanted the motto on all the money back in the 1860s; like the people who wanted to change the motto and add it to pledge were not referring to any or all gods but to a specific god i.e. the christian god.
Once you allow one religion or even just theism to dominate the public sphere then you implicitly allow muslim sheriffs and hindu sheriffs to do they same thing. Imagine anti-theist sheriffs, putting 'There is no god' on their cars.

Religious (or anti-religious) or theistic (or anti-theistic) slogans do not belong in the public sphere. They don't belong on the currency, or the motto or the pledge or the courthouse steps. America is not about one all encompassing religion, like in Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan.

Religious texts have no place on police cars IMO.

why is this an issue? oh yeah, i forgot, because democrats hate police.

Do they? Maybe they are liberal- some of them, anyway. I'm a liberal and I don't really hate police but I know they're not my friends.

Well I was looking to see once the Repubs won the Election. If any would be about making All of BO peeps EO's null and void. So he can take that with his legacy.

Oh and Indeed there are a lot of fish to fry. Although I really don't think the Demos are like fish. More like sheep. So I have no trouble grilling them.

That car has "Impala" on it too. Restricted parking there. What kind of watch is that guy wearing? Looks like Kudzu is growing on that power pole back there. Who let that happen?

So if you don't have to car5e about us, then we certainly don't have to care about you.

Why are you so special you think you get to have everything you want and be everywhere you want?

It's precisely that attitude of why there is such a backlash against Christianity in America.

I agree Pete.....and who cares if the atheists are upset. Tell them to STHU and live with it, Right?

This is forming up into quite a theocratic argument you are putting together here MMC.

weird

i am a conservative, and most of my friends are in LE in one way or another

sheriffs, local police, TSA, FBI, secret service.....i have friends in all of them

good people....who believe in a lot of the same things i do

and most of us belong to the same local gun club also

Well that's still a problem for people that don't believe in a god.

It's just better to keep this kind of silliness out of government all together.

Well OS, :2wave: Where can the atheists run to on the planet. Wherein they will come across those into religion and God or Gods.

Moreover when we will see the atheists get vocal around those Muslim Mosques that they are afraid to encounter.
