"If introduced into the stomachs of cattle, these platypus antimicrobials could improve an animal's digestion of feed and reduce methane production, one of Australia's largest contributors of total greenhouse gas emissions," he said.

thats gotta be the saddest lookin' echida i've ever seen, most look more like this

did you know that the spines on the echidna are actually hairs that have fused together.
them and platypi are the only two monotremes
and male platypi have a poisonous spur on their leg
and that i know lots of useless info about Aussie animals

But they have birdlike feet and a sort of vestigal beak-type mouth/nose/snout.
There was clearly a crossroads, millions of years ago, where they could've evolved a different way.

yes, it seems they could have easily gone down the avian route, the term monotreme is greek for single hole, indicating they have a cloaca just like birds do
