Let me first say, "ThePlayDrive doth protest too much, methinks."
I believe you are allowed to express your distaste for racism anyway you please within the bounds of the law. My problem is with how eager people are to cast the first stone at the slightest appearance of political incorrectness. The person in question did ask for forgiveness and though she should have repercussions I'm not quick to write people off who ask for lenience. If she did it again, then I'd be less likely to believe her but still I'm not a fan of unfair persecution.
I don't like it when one indiscretion or category of indiscretions is used to negatively define a person's life. I don't like the idea of someone needing to have their lives ruined over something that didn't hurt anybody. I don't like the idea of punishing someone with employer based disciplinary action for something that had nothing to do with their employer. I don't like the idea of kicking someone where they're down and continuing to do so after they've apologized and/or didn't realize they were doing anything wrong. Jay-Z, Kanye West, I-Cube and nearly every African American stand up comic (Cosby, Sinbad and others are stand-out exceptions) have used the n-word probably 1000 times as much as Paula Deen. If its so offensive maybe the rappers and comedians should set the example and not use it any more. I don't think Paula Deen is being treated fairly...and I'm black.
PS: If I'm not mistaken it was also 20 years ago.
PPS. Anybody who is honest to goodness so offended by Paul Deen or anyone else using the N-word that they need to see her lose their job in order for the healing process to begin, in my humble opinion suffers from severe mental instability, psychotic levels of low self-esteem and needs professional help immediately.

Do you feel that Catholic schools who fire gay teachers or women on birth control in the same way?
Can't she just parlay this into her own show on Sirius satellite?
Howard Stern says offensive crap and he's getting paaaaaaaaaaaaaid on satellite radio.
So she uses racial slurs. Big whoop. It has little to nothing to do with her craft, other than she cooks more like a southern black woman anyway. How she is not 400 pounds is beyond me.
Apples and oranges question but I'll try to answer it.
I think the Catholic Church has no business in the private medical matters of its affiliated employees and their families, many of whom aren't even Catholic. I have a friend who has a friend who's mother worked for a Catholic hospital when they were in high school. She had cystic ovaries. Her doctor wanted to put her on birth control to treat her condition but her mother's insurance didn't allow it. The condition worsened and she ended up needing surgery to treat the condition that had progressed into advanced stages. The insurance DID pay for the surgery. Shockingly intrusive and with adverse consequences. In a more general sense I oppose employer-based health insurance for reasons such as this and other reasons as well as the fact that it takes the power to vote with one's pocket book away from the consumer and gives it to the employer. I don't want my job telling me I have to do all my shopping at Wal-Mart because Target is not in my plan either. Of course, if there is no other option then Wal-Mart is better than nothing.
Parents get to make choices such as who will they allow to influence and mentor their children. If someone chooses to send their Children to a private faith-based school, there is a reasonable assumption that the private institution will reflect the parent's values and thus the inadvertent mentoring that occurs in the teacher/student relationship will be based upon a Catholic world view. Parents who don't want that for their children have other options. As such, I think it is reasonable for faith-based institutions that work with impressionable children to agree to sign a statement of faith and code of public conduct prior to and as a condition of employment that hopefully includes a provision of some sort that offers redemption and restoration consistent with Biblical principles for those who fall into indiscretions and are repentant.

huh?

So it is ok for the Catholic church, but not Food Network?
I think this is where people lose the right wing. Duplicity.
the situations are not really similar, at all. Also, if your attempt is to point out hypocrisy in his/her position, that does nothing to address the logic in Smeogal's original post
Dean got fired for non work behavior. Many on the right are upset.
A teacher got fired for non work behavior many on the right were over joyed.
Duplicity.
How is it actually unfair for people not to care for her for being a racist jerk? She admits to using racial terms, and she is not completely brain dead so she would have to know that term was offensive. I will leave it to the people who were offended by the use of the word to decide to forgive her. I am not going to leave it up to some white guy on the internet as you probably were not directly insulted by the behavior. Really, what is for you to forgive? How nice of you to decide for the people who were offended that they should not be.
Oh, and having consequences for using fowl language is not even close to persecution. How clueless is that statement? You can control what comes out of your mouth, but the people she is referring to cannot control how they were born. Persecution is things like being property of others, being denied education, being denied employment, being denied voting in a democracy, and even suffering things like lower wages for the same work. Being told not to use the N word in pleasant or professional conversation is not even close to persecution. It is not a requirement for being a white southern lady to say the N word. You have no clue what real persecution is, and you look quite silly for even trying to claim not being allowed to say the N word is even close to real persecution.
The situations are nearly identical.
1) On what basis are you defining smeogal as being "on the right" from his/her past postings I would see him more of a moderate middle grounder
2) seemed he was pretty clear he didn't personally approve of the policy.
3) they are rather different. For one, the catholic policy you cited deals with current behavior. Smeagol cited something from 20 years ago
4) I can think the move is beyond dumb, while acknowleding they were fully within their rights
Was that even a position smeagol held? Don't you think you should actually establish that before demanding accountability here?
it's an argument that lacks logic and fact.
So it is ok for the Catholic church, but not Food Network?
I think this is where people lose the right wing. Duplicity.
I have no idea what you're talking about except maybe you decided to vent against a Christian organization before even bothering to read the reply I offered to your question.
Again:
1. No I do not think the Catholic Church has any business telling its affiliated employees they can't use birth control and cited an example where the practice led to a terrible consequence.
2. Because and only because teaching is a profession where impressionable children are being mentored by teachers at an institution where parents choose for the purposes of instilling a faith-based world view, yes but with a provision that allows redemption and restoration for those who makes mistakes but who are repentant. Paula Deen apologized. ???
Those are the two cases that get responses here.
The right like when gays get fired or a single mother, but get fired for using racist language and they cry foul.
That is duplicitous.
I see the teacher didnt get her job back.
So what? That doesn't make your argument any less strained, without fact, and illogical
Again, do you even know Smeogal's position on that issue, or are you simply hitting him with some baseless accusation? Clearly it seems to be the later. And attacking individuals because "of the right" or "the left", as opposed to what they actually think and say is pretty ****ing stupid. Because it doesn't address what the person actually thinks, nor does it address the logic of their argument. it's an attack on their character, which tells us nothing about the logic of their position
inventing **** and demanding people account for it is ****ing stupid, no matter what label you want to slap on it. Open a ****ing book
I think this is just the straw that broke the
camel's back. Mrs. Deen using the 'N' word wouldn't have gotten her fire on it's own. The shear ignorance with which she used it in a professional environment is the key to this particular controversy. But, that isn't the real reason she got fired. Her show is a dissonance within contemporary cooking shows; where 99% of shows are either cooking gourmet dishes, cheap recipes, or diet food; Paula Deen cooks southern home dishes, without any mind towards the culinary arts, frugality, or healthy nutrition. Paula Deen is a dinosaur in the industry; the food channel has had their pen on the pink slip, just waiting for a scandal like this.
Give an example of joy about firings.I am not addressing any particular poster, but a duplicitous attitude of many.
Just look through the threads. You will see right wingers gleefully cheer the homo got fired or the pregnant woman got fired. Then in this thread they have the opposite opinion.
That is duplicitous.
So the right is happy when women and gays lose their job, but so upset about Dean.
I see no reason to not forgive Dean.
I see the teacher didnt get her job back.
So because I think that teachers at Catholic schools who commit public violations of their codes of conduct but are repentant should be restored and because I think Paula Deen should be forgiven but you don't, that means I'm showing duplicity? Wow.
