Pakistan's 'Sharia Law For Peace' Deal Privately Backed By US
The US is reportedly privately supporting a deal the Pakistan govt. made with the Taliban to introduce Sharia Law in the Taliban rich Swat Valley region of Northwest Pakistan.
The idea behind backing this deal is to weaken the Taliban by appeasing one of its two factions which have been joined in opposing Pakistani government forces.
Swat's Taliban faction is focused on local issues and a demand for Sharia Law. The other faction, the TTP, supports al Qaeda more actively as part of the global jihad.
American officials hope that the Sharia Law For Peace deal brings peace to that area and that by dividing the two groups there will be less resistance to anti-terrorism efforts.

But I just can't help but think about the short term tactics we've employed in the past which were supposedly the smart way of dealing with our problems at the time only to have the problem become worse in the long run.
Think about how we dealt with Iran and Afghanistan in 1979 and how they later became a different kind of problem directly due to our previous short term measures.
If the report is true, we are backing a penny smart but pound foolish plan that is probably very popular in the area but one which has all the elements needed to turn into a major problem later on.
Taliban fighters are ultimately encouraged by this development and will look to replicate the same conditions here elsewhere in the Western part of the country and once Sharia Law is introduced do not expect it to be un-introduced without major bloodshed.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in Japan that the agreement still needed to be "thoroughly understood."
A senior U.S. Defense Department official, however, said "it is hard to view this as anything other than a negative development." He requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of relations with Pakistan and because he was not authorized to speak on the record.
