What changed? Sounds like Kabuki theater to me. A certain Fierce Urgency of Now was palpable in the Duce's Saturday address to the nation
"The pace of negotiations must be increased. Everything must be done to achieve a ceasefire," Zelensky stated in his Saturday evening remarks.
Nevertheless the Duce was carefull to place this proposal as coming from his former Defense Minister, and present Secretary of National Security and Defence Council, Rustem Umerov. Smart. That way if it comes down like a ton of bricks blame can be placed on the broad wrestler shoulders of poor Umerov.
But it may also mean that Zelensky has a nasty surprise in store for the Russians. The last meeting between Russian and Ukrainian negotiating teams was June 2nd 2025 in Istanbul. On the eve of that meeting Zelensky unleashed "Operation Spider Web" on Russia. The Duce himself announced the devastating blow: 117 Ukro drones hit and destroyed 40 Russian strategic bombers; some 34% of Russia's strategic fleet; up to $7billions loss on Russia. Later on the Duce was accused of exaggerations; who knows?
One thing for sure is "Operation Spider Web" torpedoed the negotiations. The Duce further castigated the whole business as unserious, claiming that the Russian delegation had no powers to make any decisions. The Duce declared that the only person who can negotiate for Russia is Putin, and demanded a direct meeting with Putin. Before Putin could respond the Duce quickly declared that Putin was afraid of him
So why the sudden Fierce Urgency of Now on the part of the Duce? Nothing appears to have changed. All parties- Trump, Putin, Zelensky, Merz, Macron- are unanimous in aggreeing that Putin will not accept an Unconditional Ceasefire. Russia is unlikely to pay reparations that is a key part in Zelensky's 10 point peace plan. Russia is unlikely to give up Putin to Zelensky's Kangaroo Tribunal. So why is the Duce asking for a resumption of negotiations?
My suspicion is that the Duce is about to spring "Operation Spider Web II"
