..1987 was the year a female orca off the US west coast started her own craze when she was seen with a dead salmon perched on top of her head.

Her unusual millinery caught on: other orcas across Puget Sound, in the Pacific Northwest, were soon spotted sporting their own “salmon hats”.

By the following year, however, the fashion for fish hats had ended — as abruptly and mysteriously as it had begun.

The event became famous among naturalists as an example of an orca “fad” — behaviour that spread from killer whale to killer whale, despite serving no obvious purpose.
Strange. Saving for later? Parading around their kill? A game to see who can keep a salmon on their head the longest?

Fads. What goes around, comes around.

The 80s are definitely back.
