Trump was overly optimistic in some of his statements. No doubt. Lots of people were also overly pessimistic. The whole idea of "If you catch this bug you're going to die" was promoted day and night. People were encouraged to panic! The negative propaganda was pumped out of metaphorical fire hoses and pretty much every commentary that suggested something other than panic was viciously attacked. There was no balance whatsoever and it will likely be decades until we get a reasonable, rational analysis of both the threat and the efficacy of the various mitigation efforts.

People were not "encouraged to panic". They were encouraged to act on the side of caution.

What was known it was very contagious; many people died after contracting Covid.

Much was not known about covid-19 and how to treat it when it first started. Hence, the social distancing, mask, stay at home, etc.

The Willamette River where I live here in Portland has times when swimming is discouraged. The levels of contaminates vary for various reasons. It is stupid to think that such a place is always at hazardous levels. Now weather he know it was above or below public safety recommendations, I have no idea.

But... It is not as simple as you think it is. I do suspect the media made that out to be a problem when one probably did not exist at that time.

Glad to. If one is some kind of vaccination freeloader who wants to ride the benefits of others being vaccinated under the assumption they will magically benefit, then the wake up call is when the disease resurfaces because other stable geniuses assumed the same thing and instead created a weak link for new cases to arise. We've witnessed this recently with the resurgence of measles. One could afford a bit of respect to these stable geniuses if they all lived in some anti-vax colony where they alone suffer the consequences, but that's not the case. Instead, they will use the same medical facilities as others and create accessibility issues if there's a widespread contagion. It's sheer brilliance.
