Not sure about a one way trip, but we could definitely get there and come back.
The biggest problem would be food and water, obviously. It would take some great tech advances, but hell, we went to the moon in under a decade. I believe we as a species have the grasp to do this within a reasonable amount of time. It's all about having the will to do this though, that's the big challenge.
Smartest answer so far.We might have the tech but we don't have a planet that can be colonized. Mars is dead and has been for a billion years. It is too far from the sun, its atmosphere has been mostly lost into space. We would be better off planning a trip to the nearest Star with a suitable planet.
I see hype and little follow-through. What we have is a 35 year old promising the sky (even a television show), beyond what the most successful private and state attempts at space exploration are willing to attempt, with no explanation as to how they would accomplish this scheme. On top of that, they may have to fundraise up to 1 trillion dollars, an investment that would ordinarily strike as beyond ridiculous.
Why?I don't think I would do it, but human colonization on other worlds is a very important venture. I support this endeavor wholeheartedly and wish them all the luck in the world.
I'm sure there are a few people in this forum that wish I would sign up for this but really I just can't imagine. Apparently there is no shortage of applicants though. Beats the hell outa me why.
"An ambitious project that aims to send volunteers on a one-way trip to Mars unveiled plans for the first private unmanned mission to the Red Planet Tuesday, a robotic vanguard to human colonization that will launch in 2018.
Mars Oneinvited anyone over age 18 to apply to be an astronaut. About 165,000 people answered the first call for applications, which closed at the end of August. There will be four rounds of selection before the finalists are chosen.

Why the hell would I like to go on a one way trip to Mars> Not know but hell no.
Why?

I agree, when I say we, I'm talking about the species as a whole, not this on company. I think the government should be the ones backing endeavors like this. We'd be able to work out a lot of the kinks by colonizing the moon first.
There is nothing there. It will require terraforming and those who say "there is nothing there" are getting their opinions© from ? Sheer negativity I think.
This is for the bravest, boldest and most visionary. For most, a day without "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" is a hardship condition.
There is nothing there.
That is an honest and accurate statement.
The only thing that can be said for mars is that it is not here. You would need to bring everything with you to live, food, water, air, fuel, shielding from radiation, cosmic dust and micro meteorites.
"Terraforming " is an entertaining sci-fi pipe dream... virtually impossible.
It's for the survival of humanity! Our eventual salvation lies in expanding beyond the Earth, and eventually beyond the solar system. Only then will we be able to truly ensure our civilisation lasts.

Yes. I have seen the future of this planet, and I want no part in it.
I don't think you have much choice in that one
You don't really understand distances in space, do you?

Warp drive Mr Sulu ... beam me up Scotty..and you know this how? When you went to Mars there were no cat cafes?
Sci-Fi pipe dreams. Like phones that don't need wires. Like aluminum planes with 500 passengers? Like computers that weigh 7 ounces?
Sure. Nothing is possible.
I don't question your honesty but your claim of accuracy is a little weak IMHO.
The moon would make a much more suitable location for a permanent colony than Mars would. It is "easy" to supply from Earth and there is water there to use. Not to mention the ideal distance from the Sun. Why this fascination with Mars for a colony? It has no air and is cold as hell. The Sun is nothing but a bright Star on Mars. Maybe mining? Even if it was full of gold, I doubt it would be worth the expense of shipping it back to Earth. Mars is REALLY far away.
