One in Four TSA Screeners Quits Within Six Months

TSA administrator says low pay is to blame and promises new compensation system soon.

This never did seem to be a worthwhile career occupation. Low pay, mandatory overtime, working in a public environment, and minimal opportunity for advancement.

Yep, the correct compensation package is that which allows hiring and retaining qualified workers. Overtime should be on a voluntary basis - perhaps offering perks (beyond just the time and a half) to those who do so on a regular basis.

And in the end, what does TSA really provide? What does it deliver?

Harassment, nothing more.

The Agency was created upon a bright and shining lie. As the Bible notes, you cannot make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

What lie?

19 Bad Muslims hijacking airliners and ramming them into buildings?

That is no lie.

There have been many other attempts that failed because of the TSA.

other than being eligible for federal employment, what skill set is actually needed to serve as a functioning TSA officer?

and when there are not enough volunteers, how do you fully staff the TSA operations?

1) other than being eligible for federal employment, what skill set is actually needed to serve as a functioning TSA officer?

2) and when there are not enough volunteers, how do you fully staff the TSA operations?

1) The point is that TSA is having a problem attracting and retaining those (barely skilled?) workers. If the problem is not a scarcity of qualified labor then the obvious solution is to increase the compensation (wages/benefits) offered making it less attractive for them to seek other employment.

2) The current TSA policy of mandatory overtime is apparently making the turnover (staff retention) problem worse. Keeping that policy in place only adds to the need to have fewer folks working more hours/week. Having the workers exceed 40 hours/week costs 1.5 times as much for those working extra hours - why not just pay them more base pay, which reduces turnover and thus the need to have as many of them working extra hours/shifts?
