Nutrition warning labels are hitting shelves near you.

Health Canada, which mandated DV for sugar, is requiring warnings on food products that are high in sugar, sodium and/or saturated fat.

Health Canada's new front-of-package nutrition warning labels are beginning to appear on store shelves six months ahead of the food industry's deadline.

First announced in 2022, the black-and-white labels alert shoppers if a product is high in sugar, sodium and/or saturated fat, which the federal department says can lead to increased health risks like stroke, obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and some types of cancers.

Long ago when I as a journalist I did some stories on why Canadians live longer than Americans on average.

It's because of diet. Although the problem was growing at the time, but fast food is all fat, salt and sugar....in percentages that are addictive. We don't eat as much fat...and...are more active.

Since, the government has clamped down and regulated from within the industry.

Now they are alerting us up front which I think is a good step.

Now if we could get some clarity on what's in the OTC's (Over-the-counter-non prescription) we have to take.
 
My food diary scolds me about sodium. I sometimes get other warnings, but my calorie counts are usually within the goal.

I remember when this happened in the US regarding trans fats at fast food places. People went nuts, but they're over it now.

Unlikely - especially for non-perishables. All of them are high in sodium because salt is the primary preservative. I’m all for labels so consumers can make informed decisions but I think the reality is that consumers don’t care. People want what they want. The ingredients by serving are already listed on the packaging. If people aren’t reading that then what studies have been done to prove these new labels will make a difference?

The second image I posted is key. People are attracted to the delicious looking pictures and may not read the nutrition and ingredients label. But the warning label right on the front is impossible to miss.

We know warnings work. The increase in healthier food options and the decrease in smoking bear that out.

I remember when they added those here too. Is it required on the menu now too? I remember before that they'd have a sheet for something they'd hand you if you asked. Then it had to be posted on the wall where customers could easily access it. Now it's on a lot of menus, not all I don't think, but I don't know if that's just the rule now or just what the rules led to.

Nah, but it's generally good. My BMI is in the 23s, and I exercise pretty much daily. Still, good advice. I've kicked up my caffeine, so I probably need to stay on top of it.

If there's 20+ locations in Ontario. Which explains why my local wings and pizza place doesn't, which is where my confusion came from.

Weight, obesity, thin, fat, low BMI, high BMI, makes no difference.

At 35 males need to start monitoring those levels. Blood PRESSURE affects every aspect of your body, especially heart & lung activity. Even "healthy" active males who work out daily are succeptible. It only takes one ride in an ambulance to Emergency to convince you to start monitoring on a regular basis.

Further, we talk about diet but the truth is no one has any idea of how much fat, sugar, salt were are eating unless you cook 100% of your own meals,no pre-prepared anything, nothing frozen.

And Calories?

Who gives a shit?
 
The DV for sugar is new on nutritional labels. It was introduced the last year or so. Sugar was always listed, but not how much of a daily value it represented.

Here's the label for a large McDonald's Coke.

So it's 77% of the DV. That's still pretty high imo as it's the equivalent of about 19 sugar cubes.
