The 12 murals created in the 1880s by Luis Gregori were intended to encourage immigrants who had come to the U.S. during a period of anti-Catholic sentiment.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame will cover murals in a campus building that depict Christopher Columbus in America, the school's president said, following criticism that the images depict Native Americans in stereotypical submissive poses before white European explorers.
The 12 murals created in the 1880s by Luis Gregori were intended to encourage immigrants who had come to the U.S. during a period of anti-Catholic sentiment. But they conceal another side of Columbus: the exploitation and repression of Native Americans, said the Rev. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame.

I'm glad that this university is finally recognizing the genocide of native Americans, north, south & central, that Columbus helped initiate.

They might be thinking too that covering up the murals might hide the Catholic Church's complicity in that disgraceful epoch.

Christopher Columbus was a hero and had nothing to do with any alleged genocide.
As a recovering Catholic, I agree with you. The conquistadors were always led by a friar or monk with a cross to justify their rape & pillage of the native Americans. For God & Spain!
His behaviour was so atrocious he was brought home in chains, stripped of his position, he and his brother.
Is it April first already?

Columbus And Genocide
The somber chronicle of the events that ended in the genocide of the peaceful Arawaks of the Caribbean islands is amply documented in Columbus’ own letters and journals and in the pages of his most ardent admirer, Father Bartolomé de Las Casas, the great contemporary historian of the West Indies who believed Columbus had been divinely inspired to make the Discovery. But Las Casas was a thoroughly honest writer, and he did not hesitate to pass harsh judgment on his hero for initiating and carrying on the wholesale enslavement for profit of the gentle natives who had affectionately welcomed Columbus and his fellow argonauts to the New World. Throughout his long life Las Casas was an impassioned crusader for the rights and survival of the hapless Indians—his “poor innocents,” as he called them—whose cruel oppression by the Spanish invaders he laid square at Columbus’ door.

Columbus was not a nice guy at all, and hardly a hero.
The Catholic Church was the predominate protector of the Natives and Columbus was not complicit in any crimes against the Indians, read some non communist written history. No original sources say that Columbus did anything that any contemporary society would view as wrong
"Civilizing" Native Americans and converting them to Christianity was a primary Spanish cases belli during their wars of conquest. Various religious orders actively supported them in their efforts as well.
You can shriek "communism" all you want, but it doesn't change history.

Christopher Columbus: A product of his time or guilty of genocide?
A statue of the explorer has been removed from the center of Los Angeles for being a “stain on history,” but Spanish and American historians are at odds over the claim
Christopher Columbus may have discovered the New World, but he is now persona non grata in the city of Los Angeles.
Insisting that the Genovese explorer’s activities in the Americas amount to a stain on history, LA Council member Mitch O’Farrell, a descendant of the Native American Wyandotte nation, secured the removal of his statue from the city center’s Grand Park on November 10 to cheers and celebratory drumming from the local indigenous community, many of whom had fought alongside O’Farrell during his campaign.

Columbus treated the natives with respect, even adopting a native boy, and all of the Spanish abuses came after Columbus was usurped in a coup and replaced with Nicolas de Ovando
The lefties are at it again. They cannot seem to bring themselves to properly respect American history, American laws, American values, American traditions and American beliefs in God.
Screw your "traditions" of hate and savagery, they come from an age long gone by. Like many other countries the U.S. has made mistakes in treatment of other races in the distant and not so distant past. I do not want them forgotten but never glorified. They do not represent our values as a nation today and saying they do is seditious. We had a war over this and YOU lost.
Umm I don't think Columbus is the problem with those murals.
