Norway: Russia to cut all military ties with NATO

OSLO, Norway – Russia has informed Norway that it plans to suspend all military ties with NATO, Norway's Defense Ministry said Wednesday, a day after the military alliance urged Moscow to withdraw its forces from Georgia.

NATO foreign ministers said Tuesday they would make further ties with Russia dependent on Moscow making good on a pledge to pull its troops back to pre-conflict positions in Georgia. However, they stopped short of calling an immediate halt to all cooperation.

The Nordic country's embassy in Moscow received a telephone call from "a well-placed official in the Russian Ministry of Defense," who said Moscow plans "to freeze all military cooperation with NATO and allied countries," Espen Barth Eide, state secretary with the Norwegian ministry said.

Eide told The Associated Press that the Russian official notified Norway it will receive a written note about this soon. He said Norwegian diplomats in Moscow would meet Russian officials on Thursday morning to clarify the implications of the freeze.

I've always been told that Russia is much more democratic and free nation since the soviet union collapsed. Looking at it now, it doesn't seem there is much of a difference. <_<

There was hope in the 90s, but now it is in no way free and democratic.

It is not democratic, … it is correct… good for Russia. It is just recovering from democracy of 90s. How in the world it is not free?



Since the time when Russia informed Norway there has been no indication of any change in Russian – NATO ties except for exchange of harsh words.

Today NATO needs Russia more than Russia needs NATO. ( For absent minded – it does not mean Russia does not need NATO.)


The last week news anyway… somepeople do not pay atteintion to the development of debates on DP

Once China becomes more open, transparant, and democratic, I would love to see it join. UNtil then, its objectives and those of most G-7 states would clash. It wouldn't add anything constructive to the dialogue.

Russia's status according to Freedom House is Not Free.

People there do not have basic political and civil rights.

Aren't Russians glad they are not free according to Freedom House? They are glad as free people. They have a free choice to show the middle finger to Freedom House, and so they do.

People do not know how to count their monay, often because they do not have to work in order to make their money, that's why they like democracy. If you make $1000 for a family of 10 you make $1000 which is twice as much as $500, but when you make $500 for a family of 2 it is 2.5 times more than $1000. Then if you made $900 for the family of 10 the last year, and now you make $1000 for the same family it is twice as less as $500 when you made $300 the last year for a family of 2.

When Russians rejected democracy they started putting food on their tables, - of course it was true only for people who did not mind to work.

I am trying to tell you that the oligarchs were the children of democracy. I am trying to tell you that since Russia rejected democracy people (who work) went from the state of extinction to the state of being poor. In the time of democracy nobody could think that Russian doctors could make living. And when I am talking about Russian medical doctors do not try imagining American doctors, but those who can correct mistakes of American doctors.

You have expressed a belief of the doctrine of democracy - that it is not too good to be poor. In Russia there is a proverb -- To be poor does not mean to be a pervert.

I came to the states being less than poor, a lot less than you can imagine in your nightmare… I have been making a very modest income of slightly over $100,000 last years, but in neither of the times I considered or I consider myself to be poor. When you can make from $100 a month to $300 a month in 3 years – this is what make a Russian happy, even $300 is a laughable number to you. Have you improved your income 3 fold during last 3 years? That Russian with $300 look at you as at a miserable democrat.


P.S. Russians do not like the expression ""masses'' you have used, for them it is a sign of perversion.

Did america have to go through an oligarchy to a democracy? No, they came up with a democratic republic straight out from being ruled by a relentless monarchy.

I don't care what the Russians like or do not like. The Democracies of the West have the right to choose who they do and not do business with. If they choose not to include Russia in the G-7 or NATO participation because Russia does not adhere to democratic ideals, that is their business.

Good for America. (What is good for America may not be good for Russia, especially when Russia had gone (a century ago) from from being ruled by a relentless monarchy to being ruled by the Soviet regime. Are you sure my pants will fit you? )

But without China, an economic forum of the largest economies is rather...stupid.

It's like a convention of the largest land predators missing the lion convention.
 


I agree with you about the right to choose I just advise The Democracies of the West to choose to act in the interests of the West, actually I do not care about the west as much as I care about interests of the US

All they need is a constitution that guarrantees the basic individual and political rights.
It is the term and the appeal used by the Soviet regime. Russian do not like the Soviet regime and its terms.

Not sure what you mean ... Medvedev is the President of Russia today. Medved is BEAR in Russian ... They like Putin. I do, too - he is a strong player
 
When I say strong, I also mean relaible.... playing by rules...
 
What would McCain do with a guy like Putin? Obama?
