Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said North Korea is preparing to send 10,000 troops to help Russia’s war on Ukraine, in a sign of deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.

“We know about 10,000 soldiers of North Korea, that they are preparing to send to fight against us,” Zelensky told reporters in Brussels on Thursday. Ukraine officials have for weeks said that North Korean soldiers were fighting in Ukraine, without providing evidence.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said earlier this week that they were seeing signs of increased material support from North Korea to Russia, both artillery shells and missiles, though reports of personnel being sent were still being evaluated.

But speaking alongside Zelenskiy at another press conference, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said there was no evidence North Korean soldiers are involved in the fight.

Russia last week dismissed the reports of North Korean troop deployment as “one more fake.”

The deployment, if confirmed, would mark a major step in Pyongyang’s cooperation with Moscow after Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed in June to provide immediate military assistance if one of them is attacked. North Korea maintains around 1.28 million active troops, according to South Korea’s defense white paper.

South Korean intelligence says 1,500 North Korean troops are in Ukraine right now. This is reported by the established and reliable Yonhap News Agency in SK.

The NK troops wear Russian uniforms, have fake ID's and were transported to Ukraine on Russian Navy ships, according to the SK National Intelligence Service.

The SK NIS says Pyongyang is preparing 10,000 troops to be shipped to Russian held areas of Ukraine. Whether that number will go to Ukraine or a part of 'em will go remains to be seen. We can be certain Washington and Brussels are on the horn to Beijing to talk Kim and Putin out of this major escalation.

The Pentagon and NATO SecGen. Mark Rudd are slow to confirm or deny this given it would be a huge development that would require a US-NATO response of some significant kind. The US led NATO would need to get their ducks in a row about this and fast, if the reliable reports are accurate.

According to the NIS in Seoul, since August 2023 North Korea has sent Russia 13,000 containers packed with shells, missiles, and anti-tank rockets. This also feeds the increasing belief Putin is looking for a new Cold War that isn't so cold any more.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) said in a statement that it caught its northern neighbor “transporting North Korean special forces to Russia through a Russian naval transport ship.”
