How much worse can it get in Venezuela? We've seen story after story about how this country, which adopted socialism under the late Hugo Chavez, has been falling apart for the last few years, and one has to wonder how much farther down can it spiral.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Maria Arias slipped her notebooks into her backpack, scrounged for a banana to share with her brother and sister, and set off for high school through narrow streets so violent taxis will not come here for any price. She hoped at least one of her teachers would show up.

But her 7 a.m. art class was canceled when the instructor called in sick. History class was suspended. There was no gym class because the coach had been shot dead weeks earlier. And in the afternoon, her Spanish teacher collected homework and then sent the students home to meet a gang-imposed curfew.

"It's a trap," the slight 14-year-old with pink lipstick complained as she sat in the shade of a picked-over mango tree at the school's entrance. "You risk your life to be here and end up waiting around for hours doing nothing. But you have to keep coming because it's the only way out."

The soaring crime and economic chaos stalking Venezuela is also ripping apart a once up-and-coming school system, robbing poor students such as Maria of a chance at a better life. Officially, Venezuela has canceled 16 school days since December, including Friday classes because of an energy crisis.

Venezuela's problems are theirs and theirs alone.

Venezuelans elected the Socialist, Hugo Chavez who went on to Nationalized Venezuela's wealth creating industries under the pretense of returning Venezuela's wealth back to the common people.

Under Socialism Venezuela's Central planners mismanaged every industry they Nationalized and instead of working on diversifying away from Oil decided to become almost solely dependent on a volatile commodity.

Other industries were so mismanaged and or neglected Venezuela became heavily dependent on imports for even the most basic goods. Venezuela has to import Coffee of all things.

When Oil prices fell, the Venezuelan Govt thought it would be a good idea to make up for that lost revenue by printing money.

Its called " Siegnoriage ", and its the profit a Sovereign currency holder makes when the cost to print currency is less than the face value of that currency.

But no Government does this to any extent because its exceedingly dangerous and idiotic. Execpt for Venezuela of course

Now, their currency is worthless. Since no importer wants to be paid in worthless Boliviars their people lack basic goods and food, there's biblical shortages of food and supplies

Sure, the pro-Socialist narrative is to blame America but thats easily debunked

Ironically, the narrative of blame seems to be on free trade. Just think of what could happen if NAFTA disbanded. We'd probably never see another Honduran mango again. Mexican mangos would cost twice as much and be the size of a thimble because of the lack of competition among mango growers.

Ignorant and uneducated too. It's no great mystery why the Democrat party is trying to flood the US with a as many illegals from Mexico, Central and South America as possible. They're typically uneducated, and ignorant of the concepts written into our founding documents that limit Government. Concepts like Natural law, rugged individualism and American exceptionalism are alien to them. Many illegals think they're entitled, think tax payers should pay for their Healthcare and provide them with Social services, they're the perfect demographic for the Democrat party to exploit.

They're also predisposed to accept Socialism as a solution, believing that the Govt, any Govt actually has the ability to right disparity and make things " fair ". That's what Chavez promised, to return the wealth of Venezuela back to its people, and unfortunately for them, they bought into it.

Isn't that pretty much what the democrats in the US have been doing for years? The good ol' "take from the rich and give to the poor" mantra that promises free college, free health insurance, free birth control, free food, free phones, free internet, etc... If we don't stress the value of self reliance and hard work on the kids and young adults of today, we will end up becoming a socialist ****hole like Venezuela in the not too distant future.

The one interesting note is that Venezuela inadvertently installed a fuse in their seignoriage system that staved off complete monetary catastrophe when they even contracted out the printing of their money to a company in Canada. We won't see trillion bolivar notes because they can't afford to print their money anymore.
