WASHINGTON — The government is taking the unusual step of responding to conspiracy theories about the destruction of the World Trade Center.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, Gaithersberg, Md.), which investigated the causes of the collapse of the twin towers, said Wednesday (Aug. 30) that it has posted a "fact sheet" addressing alternatve theories about the fires and collapse. Several academics have put forth a "controlled demolition" and missile attack hypotheses for the destruction of the towers.

NIST concluded after a three-year building and fire safety investigation that the towers collapsed after being hit by separate, fuel-laden aircraft flown by terrorists. The impacts severed and damaged support columns, dislodging fireproofing insulation and dispersing jet fuel over multiple floors of each tower.

The resulting fire, which reached temperatures as high as 1,000 degrees C, weakened floors and columns, causing upper floors to collapse after sagging and pulling inward on perimeter columns. "This led to the inward bowing of the perimeter columns and failure of the south face of WTC 1 and the east face of WTC 2, initiating the collapse of each of the towers," NIST concluded.

NIST's probe rejected claims that upper floors "pancaked" on top of lower floors, causing the collapses. Other investigations pointed to huge amounts of office supplies, especially paper, as a source of fuel that significantly raised the temperature of tower fires beyond those that jet fuel would normally burn outside of an aircraft engine combustion chamber.

"Both photographic and video evidence—as well as accounts from the New York Police Department aviation unit during a half-hour period prior to collapse—support this sequence for each tower." NIST concluded.

The NIST report, although lengthy, is the definitive report on the collapse of the twin towers. It was exhaustively done by professionals. A report on WTC 7 is due out soon.

The linked Fact Sheet disputes most of the popular conspiracy theories floating around the web.

In light of this, people will now claim the NIST was in on it as well. :2razz:

Yep.

If Bush is so dumb, I wonder how he organized such a massive conspiracy and managed to keep eveyone so quiet about it??

What makes you believe that Bush would have done any of the organizing?

Here we go.....

A posted article about the very thing someone we all know and love ( ) said earlier in another ridiculous 'conspiracy/physics' thread: they did NOT pancake, they fell in on each other like a souflet(sp) and the multitude of materials in each building burned, causing the so-called 'low temp' smoke.
Many of the major news organizations have decided to not show the actual collapses anymore, but it was pretty obvious what happened when they were shown live.
I liken this crap of 'conspiracy' theories to the deniers of the Holocaust.

Your preposterous soufle theory is one of a kind. What are you a cook?

It's more preposterous to say it fell pancake style and defied gravity.( I take it you work at IHOP) And it's not one of a kind, a post to start this thread said it."Inward bowing of the perimeter columns". Put your hands fingertips to fingertips and slowly bend them down. That's what happened. The resultant force of all that building buckling blew out the debris, smoke, etc. to form what you erroneously called a ' high velocity cloud'
Do you read everything or just go about picking......oh wait...you go about picking out what you can either kick around a bit or play 'intelligent' with. Try responding to the actual point, k?

The only part of the building that fell was the top section and with the South Tower not even all of that. The core columns were severed and the floors were blown out to create a virtual free fall of the top section.

Inward bowing of perimeter columns? First of all the building was held up by the core columns. Secondly your idea would demand all the perimeter columns of the impacted floors to break away at the exact same time to avert angular momentum which have caused the top sections to topple.

Are you a structural engineer or did you just stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night??

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night but I have read about angular momentum.

Sorry, but reading about 'angular momentum' on conspiracy theory web sites doesn't count.
