The long-tailed bat, one of the country’s only two native land mammals, flew away with the top prize.
I can understand the impulse to enter a favorite bird competition and vote for a bat.

They had included New Zealand’s two native bat species among the avian contenders for the first time to help raise awareness.

Laura Keown, a spokeswoman for the contest, said: “Because of New Zealand’s lack of mammals, Bat of the Year was going to be a very boring competition. It just felt like a nice opportunity to highlight this critically endangered native species and bring them from the darkness into the light.”

It's biblically accurate.

It might just be Batbird

You yanks probably don't know this, but after the UK joined the European Common Market, it left NZ in a real financial jam. The solution was 'The Silly party." This party's platform was, that if elected to office, they would immediately declare war on the USA. New Zealand would surrender the next day, and reap a fortune from the US occupation troops.

True story.

Hoicked from "The Mouse That Roared" I guess. But did they consider that the Māori wouldn't surrender?
