You destroy liberal democracy by increasing factionalism and refusing to compromise and govern as rational adults. To which, all of conservatives are guilty of and a solid chunk of the left are as well. If you want to continue living in a free society you need to let go of your virtue signaling and allow those you disagree with to have some power and to have some ability to legislate. All sides need to feel like they are taking a part of running the government and getting accomplishments for when good sheet happens.

Ask man on the street if democracy is under threat. And you'll get the answer "democracy? What does that word mean?"

Shouldn't surprise anyone, it's obvious the nation is sliding headfirst into chaos and corruption under Trump.

It was bound to rise to the top as Trump has become bolder and bolder and more reckless. 75% must mean there are a good number of Republicans in there....and there is.

"The overwhelming majority, 76%, see the country under serious threat. That includes 89% of Democrats, 80% of independents and 57% of Republicans."

It's a pity for all of us that these people could not see it coming when they voted for Trump...

No one can claim ignorance when it comes to Trump. If you voted for him (or didn't vote at all) then this is what you wanted.

Far too many people tried to treat the last election as if it were about the economy, though the economy was not really on the ballot; American democracy was. Oddly for those the voted for Trump (yet predictably for those that did), we traded a good economy for one that is sliding. BTW, economies do not do well in autocracy.

You're going to have to wake up way earlier in the morning to pull the wool over my MAGA eyes.

I'd like to see that poll, a link would suffice, not only because I'd like to see what the 'E' word polled, but you didn't provide a link, and the poll isn't mentioned on Newsmax, so I suspect the poll doesn't even exist.

Totally FAKE!

MAGA.

Welcome to the discussions.

Good comments. In order to have the virtue of ideas considered we have to get the big money out of government. To do that, we have to change our political climate. That happens with concerted local action. We must pass non binding resolutions in local governments in support of the American Anti Corruption Act. This will slowly change our political climate as the idea spreads. Eventually, new candidates will emerge in both parties running on the Anti Corruption platform. When congress is flipped new legislation and even Amendments are possible. This could take a lifetime just like women's suffrage did - but it worked.

That's great, but where TF were these voters last November? Harris warned us about what would come.

Or you just descend into political violence for any reason or no reason at all.

One or the other.

Ignorance is what led to voting for Trump in most cases. People fell for the hype and did not perform due diligence in vetting him. Anybody with a brain who really did their research would not have voted for him unless they were of nefarious intent.

So both democrats [sic] and fascists are to blame.

I would accept that if it were 2016.

By 2024 no one can claim ignorance as a defense for voting Trump. He'd already made it abundantly clear who he was for four years.

"We must pass non binding resolutions in local governments in support of the American Anti Corruption Act."

So, make a show of it but don't really do anything......................................

Non binding resolutions are a cop out to say 'we care' but not enough to do anything.

Better to pray to a rock

If 2016 taught us anything it is that far too many voters are not well informed. Maga voters only briefly questioned their support for DT because he screwed up the pandemic response so bad. That faded. They quickly retreated into their happy propaganda peer pressure coma.

The reasoning is that they are easier to pass. It's not like local ordinances are going to do much for the nation anyway. The whole point of passing them is symbolic. Added up all across the land, that changes the national political climate. That's the real goal. Change the political climate from: "Nothing can be done" to: "There are more of us; we have the power. We can change things when we unite." That's why this movement depends on forming local left/right coalitions to get the job done. The new candidates can come in both parties. Getting the big money out of government is a non partisan cause because both parties are complicit.

Most Americans agree:

1. There is too much big money influence in politics.
2. There needs to be better candidate choices.

This movement is focused on addressing both concerns.

People are disenchanted with both parties. This is a viable plan to turn things around. Sure. It will take a long time, but there is no other viable plan to do it, and worth while change can't come about overnight.

I was a reporter for more than three decades.

I have never known a non binding resolution to do anything but bore the shit out of the people who have to listen to the debate.

"Symbolic" is for cowards who need to be able to point at something and say they are "on side" when cowardice is their motivation

This is almost 3 months old.

Correct. A non binding resolution by itself will not do anything. The plan certainly won't work with a single non-binding resolution. It required much more than that.

They have already been passed in 60 local governments. Even that much has done nothing to move the needle. The plan requires this to happen in thousands of local governments. That will get attention and begin to change things. It has a long way to go.

Similarly, 15 years after the Women's Suffrage movement began, things had also gone nowhere. Good thing they didn't give up so easily.

Now, of course, if you have a better idea lay it on us. That doesn't seem to be forthcoming. What it really looks like is making excuses for not getting involved. And that certainly won't solve anything.

Cheap shot and taking my inventory

I thought you were above that.
