New Car Purchases

Anyone else get a new vehicle this year? New from a dealer, to be specific. The missus bought one two years ago and I bought one in late June. In the last two days I have gotten comeons from three different after market insurance companies. I don’t recall if we got these when the missus got hers. I wonder who is providing the information, the selling dealer or if the state motor vehicle records are public information or is the state DMV selling my name and info. We bought from different dealers.
 
I bought new last year. In Ontario the dealership registers the vehicle for you which is convenient as heck.

As for insurance I had an agency already that I've been dealing with for several years.

How are you getting comeons? Via mail or online?

My favorite attempted information harvest is when a dealership (usually the business manager) asks for my social insurance number to do a credit check.

They did that last year. But I was paying cash so instead of simply saying no as per usual I just burst out laughing.

I hate dealerships. 😠

If you checked something on the your phone while in the dealer it could have prompted a digital marketing offer. They are becoming more prevalent. Your phone has to be really locked down to avoid triggering them.

Guess would have to check the fine print in what one signs.
But the DMV shouldn't be in the business of selling info period.

We are pretty fortunate. I have honed my car buying chops for a while now, The trick is not to “need” a car, they can smell that. I did all my research and dickering online, this time. The dealers have an “Administrative Fee” that they add to the price, I see it only as a revenue enhancer. I made a cash offer and told the dealer that they could allocate whatever funds to whatever boxes they needed to, but the bottom line was what I was going to pay. The finally accepted my offer and I asked how long the process was going to take once I arrived at the dealership. They said three hours. Why do you need thre hours to fill out some paper work. I love it when the send you into the finance office. That’s where the plucking happens. I make it clear that I am in a rush and have no more money so let’s get to the signing.

( had road tested quite a few vehicles earlier this year and was going to wait. With the trade uncertainty, I decided maybe I should take the plunge now.)

You're likely not insured for things on the car that break.

I've been in the business world long enough to know how to manage the business manager/vulture.

I lead the conversation and begin with the phrase "let me save you some trouble...".
 
Reminded of this I saw the other day about dealing with pushy salesmen.
“If you’re one of those customers that come in on the lot to look at cars and not be bothered by a salesman, you totally can. But if a salesman comes up to you, instead of just saying, ‘I’m just looking,’ tell them you recently just filed bankruptcy and owe $20,000 dollars on a 2019 Rogue. And I promise he’ll leave you right alone,”
One person who replied to his video shared the way they like to get back at dealership workers. However, their remark didn’t seem to be in the same spirit as what Laces was talking about.
“I went to a dealership years ago on a rainy day. Pulled up to the new cars furthest from the building and waited,” they wrote.
“A salesman came out. As soon as he came up to my door, I took off. My kids thought that was the funniest thing. I waited til he went back inside and I came back. Did the same thing and he threw his hands in the air. It was hilarious!” they concluded.

My 9 year-old Audi was a great car but I just wanted something new. I was under no pressure to trade it in. I expressed an interest in a CPO '25 Audi from the same dealership in February. It had 2900 miles and was discounted by $4k. The dealership actually lowered the price further before I went in to make the deal. The salesman tried to get me to buy a brand new one, but the CPO car actually had more options. Someone else took the depreciation, it is still under warranty and I've had no issues. I'm loving it.
