Need new furniture? You might need to start looking. Trump considering taxing foreign furniture

There was 3,766 Household Furniture Manufacturing in the US businesses as of 2024. California the largest manufacturer of furniture in the U.S. produces a little over 9.3% of furniture made in It's 535 manufacturers the U.S.
Not sure what this is, but

Furniture

The proportion of furniture in US homes that is domestically produced has been
steadily declining, with most furniture now being imported.

About one-third of furniture sold in the US is domestically produced, while the
remaining two-thirds are imported.
The largest exporters of furniture to the US
include China, Vietnam, Mexico and Italy.

2/3rds? That means Trump really doesn't want furniture manufacturing to come back to America, he wants another tariff revenue stream.

If you don't like the source, here is another:

Despite ongoing efforts to "reshore" manufacturing, the reality is complex. According to
the United States International Trade Commission, in 2022 imports represented nearly
61% of all furniture sold
, including 86% of all wood furniture and 42% of all upholstered
furniture. China remains the largest source of imported furniture at $12.6 billion, followed
closely by Vietnam at $12 billion, according to latest 2024 estimates.

The US of A has needed a re-haul for quite some time. Time to get back to our grass roots.
What are you talking about? The topic is tariffs.
American corporations have been exploiting third-world countries for decades. What used to be manufactured by Americans in Des Moines, Iowa is now made in child-labour sweatshops in Sri Lanka. Do you think tariffs will close those sweatshops and build factories in Des Moines?

Go ahead you ****ing idiot. I reached recover, repair, build a decade ago.
I’m in the process of re-furnishing our entire shore house.

The only new items that I plan on purchasing NEW are the mattresses. Maybe a couch (but I’m hoping to get a used one in good condition)

I’ve been scouring 2nd hand stores and social media marketplaces and town buy/sell groups (as well as free groups)

Not just for costs, but also for aesthetics.

There is SO much old furniture floating around that can be refinished, etc - and I enjoy giving new life to a dresser, table, chairs, etc.

You would think the tariffs would be a good thing then. Slow down those sweatshop factories.

I’ve thinking much the same when reading this thread.

Excellent pieces of furniture can often be found left by the side of the curb. With basic skills many can be returned to like new condition.

And when those prices skyrocket, along with all the other costs that are skyrocketing now, all those lazy people need to stop complaining and just go cut down some trees and build their own furniture.

We made a couple large purchases before the tariffs. Now it will probably come down to necessity or opportunity. I'm hoping to avoid having to buy anything big before some semblance of sanity prevails.
