So with all the clamoring about fraud possibly from both sides in the election, isn't it time we make sure it doesn't happen....period

We have four years to make sure everyone has a valid ID to vote....and is eligible to vote

Yeah...I know the midterms are two years away, but the presidential is where this stuff always comes up

We need to come up with machines that are fraud and hack proof, and a system to make sure only those people that should vote, do vote

I am NOT saying there is wholesale fraud happening.....but wouldn't it be nice to make sure it never does?

I wouldn't mind making this a paid for thing....I guarantee the American people would donate the money to set it up....

I would start out the fund with the first $ 500

Nope.

No "National ID."

No chips, no bar codes, no electronic money...nothing that gives the central government more control over the individual than it already has.

If a valid driver's license or birth certificate isn't good enough...then I don't need to vote.

I have enough trouble fitting all my current cards in my wallet as is.

I agree with you about a "National ID" but a Federal Law requiring an Official ID to vote is a must, along with a mandatory minimum multi year prison sentence for voter fraud.

I agree..

You are going to have to issue more like voting licences than just registering..

"We need to come up with machines that are fraud and hack proof, and a system to make sure only those people that should vote, do vote"

This is going to be incredibly hard, manual ways may be best with a 5 person jury type counters or something..

Blockchain voting has huge implications but I don't think the average joe is ready for that yet..

You can just vote right on the bitcoin "machine" and all votes will be just as immutable as a bitcoin transaction itself, which is pretty much the most secure thing in the entire world.. It has active security that uses about the same amount of electricity that Germany does now..

Bitcoin also is not ready to handle that many "votes" all at one time but segregated witness and the lightning network are happening RIGHT NOW that will fix that and then see how that works with counterparty..

Their are hundreds of schemes on how to use blockchain to vote but I wouldn't trust it on anything but the Bitcoin network/blockchain because it is THE one that is secure, fort knox X100..

You can easily issue your own tokens and use them for voting since years.. It is coming..

Okay

It doesn't have to be another ID....most of us have one anyway

How about we give a free one to those that don't have one....after making sure they are eligible, and then as you turn 18 you get your voter ID card

We need to make sure that one person, one vote is happening

And that that one person is actually registered and eligible to vote

The machines still are an issue....how do we make them unhackable?

I'm going to assume that you have a drivers license, voter registration card, and a social security card. A national ID card can replace all of those.

That was my thought....but so many are against any ID laws for voting

And that I don't understand

Whether we have had fraud in the past or not...wouldn't it be nice to make sure we never have a major issue in that area?

Why can't we once stop a problem before it becomes a problem....

Now if we had a plan for the machines and the actual votes....they worry me

Most of the liberals I interact with (away from here) aren't against requiring an ID. However, they are against the typical R driven ID law like N Carolina recently. Personally I'm all for an ID law. The Constitution requires that you be a US citizen in order to vote therefore a mechanism must be in place to ensure that.

There will never be a hack proof electronic device. There will never be a paper ballot that cannot be changed. I'm in favor of voter ID, but it can only catch the deliberate individual cheat. The present system my county uses, a paper ballot and an electronic counter, probably works as well as any.

A national system means a national registry. I'm with you. Too much information in the wrong hands.

Maricopa County? I like that system. The machines are currently linked electronically with the county recorder's office but thy can be easily air gapped. Then the ballots could be individually tabulated at the polling place by whoever is running each location with an independent monitor and the results hand delivered to the recorders office.

I get that reluctance, but is there really that much difference between the state government having it already (drivers licence, etc.) and the fed having it? I would be surprised if the fed didn't already have access to it anyways.

Chesterfield Va. The ballot is paper and pencil. You take your ballot to the counting device which counts and keeps. There is no outside link. Each ballot is numbered, but they cannot be connected to the voter other than by direct comparison to the registry. We also require am ID to vote.

Here in Phoenix (Maricopa County) we have a paper ballot with a sharpie. The ballots are then fed into a machine. Same ballot at the polling place as used for mail in ballots.

Might not be. But it appears to work with gun permits. In that case the store physically keeps the record and access is given only with a warrant.
