On Wednesday, February 22 at 1pm EST (6pm GMT), NASA is going to hold a news conference to announce a major finding relating to planets outside the Solar System.
Scientists from all over the world are arriving at NASA today, in preparation for this major announcement, which at this time is still being kept secret. The rumors, which are flying around the upcoming announcement, include finding more than 60 planets in nearby systems which could harbor life, and actually finding life on a nearby planet. However, we will not know until tomorrow's announcement.
The announcement will be live on NASA TV at Noon, central time.

Fake news?
No, NASA is advertising this announcement. It should be noted that NASA's announcements tend to be lots of hype around things that are generally not very exciting or sensational to lay people though.

Yeah but they're exciting to us space nerds.

I predict a 0.0% chance that NASA is announcing that they found life outside the Solar system. My guess is this is going to be an announcement that the exoplanet search has been far more successful than previously thought.

Yea, I think that's going to be the direction of the announcement too. Not just exoplanets, but exoplanets that are the size of earth, and in the Goldilocks zone, maybe with an atmosphere or water detected.
Ok. Then we get to sit on that information for potentially a few hundred years until we have the technology to send a probe. Hooray.
Relax, we're going to Mars soon.
Oh goody. More dust samples. :2razz:
It's not a bad hypothesis, but with what? The Kepler? Is it sensitive enough to pick up atmospheric signals on an earth sized planet? How close would such a planet have to be?Yea, I think that's going to be the direction of the announcement too.
