My wife cried last weekend when the landscapers (Hispanics) were here installing mulch. Because...

We're instructing them what to do (same company we've used for years). Cut in the beds, prune and install the mulch.

And then she goes in the house and cries.

I follow and ask her what's wrong.

She says it's because she saw their faces. It became personal. Then she asked me where people "like" them will be shipped to and would it be bad.

I had no answer.

And then we went on about our lives like tons of us white people do (whose families immigrated here at some point).

That's exactly what she was worried about. That's why she cried.

She knows those people are targeted. Hell, tons of us do.

But the good news is both of us are active trying to stop the racism. That probably pisses a lot of people off.

Many of them consider empathy, which is one of the roots of biblical morality, to be a sin. They are mixed up people.

The thread is about my wife seeing the faces of Hispanic workers and knowing that people just like them (innocent or guilty) are being rounded up and sometimes sent to other countries without due process.

It became more real to her because of their faces and this moment in American history.

Or we can give MAGA/Trump the benefit of the doubt and just ignore what's happening to Hispanic people all over.

I understand the worry.
But
We made it a point to know our landscapers by name, on day one.
