It makes perfect sense.
Domald Trump does not care much what it does to the economy or about voters displeasure. He fully anticipated most of the blowback. There are still no tangible
consequences for him.

This tariff business is actually about what happens behind closed doors in the days and weeks right after. It's the equivalent to the local mob boss demanding 20% of receipts 'protection money' from all the businesses in his territory - except this mob boss sees his territory as global.. That is why there is a blanket baseline and they were NOT targeted to specific situations, or specific countries. We need to stop comparing Trump to Hitler, because he is actually Don Corleone waiting for each businessman to come kiss his ring in a private audience and ask him for special indulgence or a lower fee - at a price we never hear about for either himself or a friend who came calling earlier at a meeting or via phone. These transactional deals are not about American jobs, or tariffs unless the foreign tariff is on a product that either he or an ally of his needs reduced.

Its the perfect breeding ground for Mafioso type corruption and sweetheart dealmaking with Trump holding all the cards. He's already played his winning hand before they even a good look at their cards, and he is holding more of the chips. He is lining his pockets, and those of countries or business that are amenable to 'cooperate' and return favors.

Hmmm...

If the city held an election and the people of the city chose Don Corleone to get the fat cat business leaders in line...chose him to protect the citizens from the greed, the predation, the grinding poverty being forced up them...and chose him to make their lives more livable, would you REALLY be on the side of the fat cat business leaders instead of being on the side of that city's citizens?

You seem to ignore the fact that the American people ELECTED Donald Trump to be their President.

Perhaps you should stop listening to David Brooks.

Hmmmm....

First, not all of the American people voted for Don "Juan" Tarriffiolone.

Second, those who did thought they'd be "made men" (or their husbands, boyfriends, lovers would be "made men") and partake in the grift.

But to paraphrase a line from "Saving Private Ryan" - graft flows up the chain of command, not down.

But your hypothetical breaks down. He's not on the side of the city's citizens, if he is busy engaging in the same greed and predation for himself and his cronies. Its not the city's citizens getting the benefit of the sweetheart deals he's making behind closed doors. They are just stuck with the increased prices charged to make up for losses from the bottom of the till.

That's how elections work, you know.

Nonsense.

Do you think the bodega owner's goal is to become a "made man"?

Sorry, but your "Mafia" scenario, because it is so preposterous, is failing more and more, the more you talk about it.

Oh...so now you are saying the voters are the Mafia.

LOL!!

Keep talking...

It's just extortion. Why don't people know that?

This doesn't contradict Brook's point.

Your comparing Trump to a gangster actually supports it.

This is where you, like Brooks, ignore reality in favor of anti-Trump bias. This is where you make shit up about Trump's motivations.

Everything Trump does is in favor of the country's citizens.

Lower energy costs, increased investment in US production, increased access to the world's markets. This isn't for the benefit of Trump (he doesn't need any of that) or his "cronies" (whoever that is). It's for the American people who get employment, higher wages and increased small business opportunities.

When that bodega owner isn't being crushed by the fat cat business leaders of the city, they are now able to grow their businesses...thanks to the guy they elected in their city.

Consumers and Small businesses will be the first that suffer from tariffs.

By design.

The tariff wars that Trump 2.0 have kicked off are designed to fund the federal government and help justify the whopping tax cut that they’re going to hand to the wealthiest.

This is MAGA ‘Merica.

Everything happening here is designed to benefit the ultra rich 🤷‍♀️

It's amazing how many people, still, think that tariffs take money from foreign countries who pay it to the USA. It's consumers subsidising the wealthy and the oligarchs like Musk.

Not all of the people of the city voted for Corleone, either.

The funeral parlor owner wanted vengeance for his daughter being assaulted, but didnt trust government to do it. And he asked the Don to kill the boy who did it.

So, yeah, the bodega owner wants to be gangsta… he’s just too chickenshit to do it himself, alone.

The central thesis of the FF was man was corruptible.

So silly. No, this is you ignoring reality in favor of Trump's idiocy.

Have some reality.

Everything you post is made up. Everything.

Let's see what conservative Republicans are saying.

Reality. Get some.

Your "Mafia" analogy continues to fail with each of your posts.

In this one, you once again ignore the fact that Trump was elected. For your analogy to hold true, that funeral parlor owner...by asking the elected Corleone to deal with a problem...IS, in fact, "trusting the government"; that is, the elected government.

Sounds like David. And as he is so often, he is spot on.

Why is David Brooks an expert on these matters and why do we care what he says again?

I do understand he is a decent writer and appears to have crafted a narrative that reminds you of other stories you've heard.

Good for him.

I believe in giving people credit for the good ideas that I promote. If you or your hero ever have one, I will do the same.

Saying someone isn't Hitler because they are the Mafia sounds like lazing writing and it isn't an idea, it's just a different tired slur.

Brooks never discussed Hitler in his comments.

Perhaps you should link to your inspiration since you attributed your comments where you did exactly that to David Brooks.

I said he inspired my theory on why those Tariffs were put on the way they were to promote and permit corrupt dealmaking to his own personal benefit, because that was his theory on motive, and he deserved the credit. He did not write the OP. I did.

So you were "inspired" to go from comparing Trump to Hitler to comparing Trump to the Mafia.

Good for you!

Not quite. I never compared Trump to Hitler. Others have. I think the new model is better suited to Trump's personality and behavior. Adolph cared more about Germany and its place in the world than Trump does about America. Trump does not give a damn. That indifference is shared by a Don towards his 'territory'
