Some years ago I was overnighting in New Orleans (local pronunciation N'Awlins). I was staying a major hotel on Canal St., the major road from the city to the Mississippi River waterfront. I cashed a check for $100, tucked the cash into my pocket & headed out for dinner & an evening out in the well known French Quarter. I walked down Bourbon Street.

Heading back to my hotel, I was again on Rue Bourbon. The street is well lit by the many jazz clubs - until you reach the last block before Canal St. This short stretch is dark because the stores on either side face Canal, so there is no light on Bourbon. And lots of locals were in the darkness.

A black woman came at me from the shadows & wrapped herself around me, saying things like 'Baby, baby..' I finally got loose from her but back in my hotel room the cash was gone. Apparently I had been mugged.

So if anyone is visiting the French Quarter, take a cab back to your hotel.

Pickpockets are not really muggers, but be mindful or I'll still be out 100 smackaroos.

She did more than pick my pocket. If I had used violence to escape her, her many dark friends in the deep shadows could have put my life in danger.

You didn't even realize you'd been taken from until after. Just thought she 'wanted some' of Jack?
But they were lurking to pounce and violently mug you?

Did a kid offer to guess where you got your shoes?

What brought up that not so fond memory years after the fact?

You ‘cashed a check’?

And your telling us where not to go in New Orleans 50 years later?

The corner of Bourbon and Bienville has changed a bit since then. I’ve walked it a hundred times and never had an issue.

That 'cashed a check' also struck me as odd. Like, what decade was that? You have to be from Dublin Ireland or some such place to confuse pickpocketing with mugging. One is an act of mercy, the later is sheer terror

I think you were pick pocketed. I travel a lot. N'Awlins is one of the places I go on occasion. As with any big city, tourist destination, you must be careful with your money. Inside pockets, zippered pockets, money divided into different pockets. Well anyway I hope you got kissed for the $100.

They usually work in teams. One person distracts you, another takes your money and then hands it off to yet another person. Even if you realize they just picked your pocket those still hanging around will just say "I don't have anything".

Oh true. Once they have your money it's gone. You have to keep the cash guarded and keep the potential thieves away from you. In Rome and Florence you have to watch the groups of little kids who swam around, they are typically pick pockets. In Paris is the young kids on the Metro, a couple perform and a few others pick pockets as you watch.

“Dark friends in the deep shadows.” I gather you are white.
