ATWATER, Ohio — Waterloo Local School District officials say there has been a confirmed case of MRSA in its middle school.
A letter was sent out to all middle school parents this week informing them of the case.
The letter said the district continues to disinfect equipment and commonly used areas in the school, and are encouraging students to wash well with soap and water and to cover open sores and wounds.
The letter gave parents tips on how to prevent transmission of staph and symptoms of MRSA.

YIKES! This be some serious problem, here, folks. Expect this to start showing up in more schools and later, in more public places. It cannot always be successfully treated (although in healthy people, that's rarely the case -- so far).

MRSA infection - MayoClinic.com

Relax! If you poke a finger up your nose, there's probably a fifty fifty chance you will be touching some MRSA bugs. That's where they live, and that's how many people carry it.

One of my brothers had it. He just had to do rounds of antibiotics whenever it flared up. It took awhile to get under control, but it was hardly life-altering.

That's not what the Mayo Clinic says, Manc. I only know one person IRL who's ever had it -- a hospital lab worker, who was at death's door because of this.

Maybe there are different strains, and some are more severe?

I'm glad your brother is okay.

Thanks. It mainly affected his hands which would swell up and hurt and he would get random rashes. I have known of people hospitalized for it for a few days of IV antibiotics but they also seemed to be people not in great health to begin with (let's just call them suspected addicts) or people who likely got it when they had surgery of some sort or another.

Last year I had a melanoma stage 2 mole removed from my arm just below my elbow. The mole was tiny but the incision was better than 2 inches long. The wound was difficult to heal. It became infected. The dermatologist test it for MRSA. Fortunately it was staph. We had a discussion about MSRA. She said it was nasty stuff and damned difficult to get rid of. During the process I discovered that I was allergic to sulphur drugs. I broke out in hives. I understand some people go into anaphylactic shock from sulphur. Being allergic limits the options available to you. MRSA is no day at the beach according to my Mayo dermatologist. ("day at the beach", I couldn't resist.) No sun for me anymore.

O, joy. I have a suspicious spot on my leg and will see the MD on Wednesday, because I have already had a melanoma and it metastasized. I was 12 and they excised so much skin and muscle, I have a scar on my arm that would scare a young child. Thanks to my Scottish ancestry, skin cancer runs in my family like wildfire and to my knowledge, the only cure is amputation. If they hadn't caught it when they did when I was a child, I'd have lost my arm -- or my life.

I'm very glad you're okay, Risky -- as I'm sure I will be too, even if this is cancer.

Fair skin does not fair well in a sunny environment. I suppose we'd do well to live in Portland or Seattle, which I wouldn't mind.

I've been going to a dermatologist annually, and more since I found the melanoma. Yeah, they take out hunks, no? I watched her chop me up. It was a much more than I had thought would be necessary. It's on the inside of my arm near my elbow. Sometimes people ask what happen. I tell them I got into a knife fight with a dermatologist. I'm just glad we got it in time. I dress for sun during the day and run around nekkid in the yard after the sun goes down. We all have walled yard in the Phoenix area.

Good for you for going in. The doc told me a lot of people just put it off until it's a bigger problem. Why would someone put it off? Good thing you are going. Let me know how it turns out.

I will, but like I say, this is very early if it's even a problem, so I'll be fine. I am extremely vigilant about my kid (blond hair, blue eyes) and she goes in for an annual mole check at the skin doctor's. She gets checked under her hair, between her toes, etc.

Skin cancer isn't nasty if caught early, but if it gets bad, it can be deadly. Watch out for your ears -- that's where the men in my family have gotten it.

The irony is that the Mayo Clinic is the place where you'd have the highest chance of getting a strain of MRSA worthy of panic.

O, I'd imagine any hospital has it -- that's why I was surprised it had been found in a school.
