A Quebec Mountie is under criminal investigation for allegedly making threatening remarks online during their deployment at the G7 summit last month, the RCMP confirms.

The Journal de Montréal first reported the news and said the officer's alleged remarks were made about U.S. President Donald Trump.

The French-language newspaper, citing sources, also said the officer is accused of leaking information about Trump's movements, which would constitute a security breach and could have compromised the president's safety.

Assuming all of it is true as outlined, then the Mountie needs to be in front of a judge while the Canadian government does some apologizing. This is not about appeasing Trump or sidestepping any disputes between our two nations or even glossing over it given Trump's past comments on Canada and being a 5st state. This is about a breech of protocol and a threat against another nation's leadership. Canadian leadership can be the bigger person here, in a manner that perhaps our own leadership cannot or would not.
