Me and the missus have traveled a bit in Europe; I am always depressed when I spy a US fast food outlet too soon in our trips. The Danes look the best to me, as far as body size. In Copenhagen, the main train station has a sea of bicycles parked in the morning and the lot is clear in the evening. We once saw a Baskin-Robbins 31 in St. Petersburg, only recognized because of the color scheme......

Always surprised me, seeing that burger joints don't sell their stuff much cheaper than the local grub over here.

Can't explain UK but in Spain and Turkey women traditionally have it made, once married. So getting fat is no longer a problem.

In Germany and Denmark they divorce more easily and the men seem to turn into slobs out of sheer frustration.

Okay, that's my theory, but I won't be held to it.:mrgreen:
 
America is understandable when the average American can eat up to 6,000 to 8,000 calories a day and the volume/size of steaks they eat 1 kilo plus steaks is insane ... for me it's a 8 ounce steak ... and i only have steak 1 day a week

The problem is the 2500 calorie fast food lunch. Assuming a 500 calorie breakfast, you have no room for dinner calories unless you are a tri athlete in training.

Where are these 2500 calories coming from? Is the normal McDonalds order multiple Big Mac's?
 
I think the original post should say "USA" rather than "UK", can't see the UK on the graphic.

People are getting fatter because they are moving less and eating more often. I read a while ago that the calorie intake in the late 40's was higher than now, but people were not constantly grazing keeping their insulin levels high to stop sugar spikes. Insulin encourages the body to store fat so grazing (eating little and often ) is a bad idea.
 
You have to be careful with bmi if that is the measure too, people that work out can have greater muscle density which can skew the results. As a personal example I'm counted as obese on bmi charts but I'm pretty good at body weight exercises etc.

The portions and types of food make the obesity rate inevitable. Much of the population consumes large amounts of carbohydrate and fat rich foods in large quantities; add to that a generally sedentary lifestyle and you have a recipe for high obesity rates.

Problem is portion size in the US and slowly in many places in Europe also.

China is quickly becoming a contender. Increased wealth has always been a cause of obesity. And a goal.

Why is no one (other than me) pointing out that the UK does not feature in the graphic? It's obvious that the op meant USA, in which case this shouldn't be in the Europe forum. If you're missing something this obvious you have to ask yourself what else you're missing.:2wave:

I think that there's a theory that fake sugar also kids the body into producing an insulin spike (thus fat storage)..which would explain why fatties always seem to be sucking on a diet coke or whatever...

The biggest difference is that people are eating almost constantly whilst sitting on their fat arses. The role of calories is being over played...it's more about people having raised insulin on a virtually constant basis.
 
My personal observation being that (both in the US and in many European countries) people keeping "in shape" tend to be affluent while those that grow out rather than up tend to be less so.

IOW "good" food is also a matter of individual economics, cheap junk being something avoidable only with a fatter purse that allows for alternatives to be sought.
 
weight loss when food is abundant is tough. keeping the weight off has been an every day thing for me since 2005. quitting smoking was easy in comparison. once i kicked off that last cigarette, i was instantly a nonsmoker. maintaining my healthy BMI has taken a LOT more work. however, it's totally worth it. as for the comment about fast food up the thread, i haven't eliminated it, though i have eliminated meat. if you eat less that 2k calories a day, keep a food diary, and shoot for those 10k steps, you're probably not going to get fat. at least that's my system, and it works for me.
 
It is and always has been matching your intake with your burn rates. A high end athlete can eat 8K calories a day and be undernourished. Grandma can eat a couple thousand calories a day and be getting plump in her rocking chair.
