Appearing at Georgetown University with well-known thinkers across the political spectrum, Obama touched on topics ranging from income inequality to the portrayal of poverty in the media.
"Very rarely do you hear an interview of a waitress, which is much more typical, who is raising a couple of kids and is doing everything right but still can't pay the bills," said Obama, who reiterated his call to close certain tax loopholes, including the "carried interest loophole"
"If we can't ask for society's lottery winners for that modest contribution then really this conversation is all for show," Obama said, explaining that the revenue produced from closing such exceptions could be used to pay for national early childhood education."
So that's what successful people are? 'Lottery winners'?
He wants to ask people to pay more? No,he wants to COMPEL them to pay more via taxation.
What an absolute crock .
The core tenet of progressivism is that financial success can only be achieved through abusive means and that it is the intent of every financially successful person to prevent anyone else from becoming financially successful. They do grant an exception to artists and progressive politicians.
quick refresher on how the tax break works: An executive salary is taxed at 39 percent, the highest rate for earned income. But the income of a hedge fund manager is taxed at only 20 percent, which is the highest long-range capital gains rate—even though the hedge fund manager is deriving income that’s as directly earned as the wages of a steelworker. He made money when he established his fund. But the rule for hedge funds is that the “realization event”—when income is realized—is not known until later, so “carried interest” turns the income into a capital gain. This is what’s known as a legal fiction, which means that it’s a great big lie.
As usual you sidestep the issue which is the carried interest loophole. It cuts the income tax rate from 39% to 20% for hedge fund managers. Why do they deserve to pay half the tax of the rest of the high wage earners? What makes it socialist for them to pay the same as others?
Taxation of carried interest: The loophole for hedge fund managers could end tomorrow.
I missed the issue?
Really?
How is it that one guy picking up his income as capital gains prevents a waitress from making a decent living? THAT is the point.
I don't know where you live but I live in America and in this country every single person who lives here has the opportunity to achieve financial success. Some might be brought up in circumstances that make the journey easier for them than it would be for someone else but there is no caste system or nobility that excludes ANYONE from the ability to achieve financial success. You are not restricted by race, religion, gender, age, the city of your birth, whether your parents were successful or anything else.
What progressives want is a template for success. They want to be able to say "If you do X, Y and Z you will be successful". Well, life doesn't work that way and the ONLY way to make such a template work is by using the coercive force of government against some to either clear a path or flat out carry someone else ahead of others.

Will he also be closing the loophole so 'waitresses' must include cash tips on their income tax returns?http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/obama-richest-people-aren-evil-article-1.2219519

Corruption in bloated governments. Be on guard that it doesn't happen where you live.if hard work guarantees success, why are so many 3rd world workers not millionaires?

And do you think all og them report these cash tips? It seems to qualify as a 'loophole' if laws aren't being enforced.Well, I'm not sure why you put "waitresses" in scare quotes, but I should point out that tips do have to be reported to the IRS. Because they're income.
If they continue to work hard in areas where they have an opportunity for success, that is quite possible. Just as it is in the United States.so if we remove those governments/corruption, those millions of hard workers will be millionaires?

Whew!! Quite a comparison you have there~!They are enforced. People get away with murder sometimes, would you describe that as a loophole?
Right! And it's like that in most Western democracies where people are free and limits are put on government powers. Other countries could better themselves by adopting the US Constitution and Bill of Rights but corrupt governments would never allow that to happen. In fact it would difficult to pass such rights and limits in the USA today.Which is why , statistically, in the US, the median household income is ~50k
These "handouts" are a return on investments. If you don't want people to enjoy a return on their investments in the US, or anywhere, then you can't really complain when people invest elsewhere. Why would they do as you say if they can't get a return?Income in capital gains incentivizes companies to funnel yearly earnings towards shareholders, rather than employee wages, expansion, investment. This is where the richest of the richest 1% are getting all the flack from.
The tax system should be structured to disincentive such handouts and incentivize companies willingness to raise wages, higher more people, expand, etc. This will direct money from the top 1% back down the ladder.
[Progressives] want to be able to say "If you do X, Y and Z you will be successful". Well, life doesn't work that way...
Obama's coments are typical of left wing politicians.Am I the only one who noticed that Luther appears to be all but agreeing with the infamous 'lottery' comment here?
You can do everything right, and not be extremely successful. That's precisely what Obama said according to the OP! The obvious and inescapable corollary of that is that if you are extremely successful, it's not only because you've done things right. 'Lottery' is obvious hyperbole on Obama's part, but it's quite heartening to see one of his conservative critics come even this close to agreeing with him. Perhaps the US is not so hopelessly mired in blind hyperpartisanship as we often see from some of the more outspoken participants on the forum.
