WTF is going on up there?

is this inspired by OWS?

its amazing how we don't hear much about it even though its merely 380 miles away from New York City and 320 miles form Boston.

are tourists being targeted at all?

The Quebec government is seeking to raise tuition for public Quebec universities by a significant amount over the next 4 to 5 years. Quebec currently has the lowest tuition costs in Canada. The initial aspect of the protests was driven by that. I expect the protests or riots afterward are driven by bored young people seeking exictment with generally little to lose

The riots are democracy. This out-pour of disapproving sentiment is amazing. To have so many people go out night after night and protest, it's truly inspiring. The commitment and determination against the increase is fantastic.

Most people are complacent and accept things they are told, but those in Quebec have said "no." And this is precisely how the people have a true voice - demonstrations.

They have the lowest tuition fees, and they have them because they care about it; they care enough to protest tuition increases.

I fully support them, for they're told tuition will rise but they're not given facts as to why. The books are not opened and the reasoning for tuition increases are not given via data. They should demand facts, a good reason, facts explaining the increase. And, by saying "no," they are doing exactly that, but such information will not be given, and for that reason alone, I fully support the fight in Quebec.

It's summer now, so they'll be out like mosquitoes and just as pesty. Wait till winter starts in July (lol!) and they'll scurry for the cracks and hang out in their smoke-filled dens. This is definitely linked to OWS mentality. The students have an elitest, entitled air about them. A "je ne sais quoi" I'd say. LOL! I am completely not impressed. Montreal, I have no idea what you did to deserve this. Quebec is a planet unto itself, IMO.

Quebec students would still have the lowest tuitions in Canada if the government raised the rates. They are cry babies and there are anarchist elements for sure. I would not be surprised if the OWS money machine (and there is one) is helping. And of course, my favorite enemy of all, big unions.

I could care less about those students. I do feel bad for the beautiful city of Montreal, however.

Young people are protesting right now because they feel the government should clean up the bureaucratic mess in our universities and cut frivolous spending before they ask more from the students. I think they aren't entirely wrong on this point but I also think that the raise is reasonable. They are also protesting against what seems to be a very corrupt government bent on big public spending which profits private enterprises (foreign ones, even). What annoys me about the protests, though, is that it has attracted A LOT of young people into the left-wing, precisely when we are in very bad times economically. At a time where we most need to cut spending, privatization is the worst evil imaginable to the huge majority.

Left-right debates were unknown to Quebec only a few years back. The political spectrum has always been between the "souverainistes" and "fédéralistes", about Quebec sovereignty from Canada. The right wing mindset is something incomprehensible to a lot of Quebecois because it has always been ignored and correlated with English Canada (the bad guys, basically). The young people don't really talk about economics and don't really have any understanding of markets. The mindset is all about the government being the sole provider of everything good. We are in a huge debt, the fifth worst in the world, and the left keeps reminding the people that it really doesn't matter, as long as we feel happy right now. A more libertarian right wing is starting to take form slowly but surely as the economy sinks more and more.

Elections have just started a few days ago and it does not look promising. The major parties are all unpopular but people will end up voting for them nonetheless. The liberals might even come back and the strikes will continue.

Yeah there are 3 parties and they all suck!

There are three parties the federalist Libéral Party, the sovereigntist Parti Qubecois, and anti-corruption CAQ (which is quite possibly the worst acronym for a party ever). I personally support the Libérals since they are federalist national unity is the first priority even though Quebecois support federalism they don't want to vote Libéral or CAQ. I beileve a provincial NDP which would be very federalist but also social democratic like the PQ would win if it excisted as that is what Quebec wants.

I think more than anythign else they/we want politiicans that stop lying to us and making election year promises to buy our votes. Some kind of end to corruption as well if we are gonna have pipe dreams.
All 3 parties fail miserably IMHO. CAQ (yes terrible acronym and worse logo) may win for being the new kid and not having proven their corruption/dishonesty/incompeternce yet, It is merely assumed at this point. Personally I have no clue who I'll vote for, I think I dislike Marois the most as she has a proven track record of utter failure, Ministre de sante, finance, education. Charest has bungled but she has been down right incompetant whenever she had a portfolio. Legault doesn't impress me and I never really liked Charest.

Would you vote a provincial NDP if there was one? The CAQ's anti-corruption credibility comes form it's leader former police chief and anti-corruption advocate so to my knowledge they do have some credibility just not much.

NDP provincially maybe, not really sure. Problem with the corruption is not jsu tthe politicians it's systemic. It would take a very very dedicated group of politiicans to get rid of it. I don't see the CAQ ding much, les fonctionnaires will still be there. ATM i'll probably vote CAQ, not really voting pro CAQ or even as the lesser of 3 evils but merely as the only one of the 3 that hasn't proven itself to be incompetant/corrupt, not that I have very high hopes. But if he keeps comign out with crap liek the 5 oclock high schools he wil lose me and I'll probably spoil my ballot
