Money in the 2024 Presidential Election

Open Secrets does us all the favor of tracking candidates' spending, and here's their reporting for the election:


The interesting thing is that the Harris campaign spent over twice what the Trump campaign spent, and the outside spending for Trump only slightly outspent the outside spending for Harris, so that the total spending for Harris was a good 50% higher than the total spending for Trump. She still lost. It looks like the assessment in Freakonomics about campaign spending was accurate--money alone isn't going to win you an election.

Harris had to pay for Hollywood style entertainment while Trump just stood there and talked to his supporters.
