Was the woman who was shot, latino? I ask because you suggest that was the reason.

I can't find anything about that, not that it matters.
Looking at her last name, one could hazard a guess, but her first name and that of her Dad's are not.
She left behind 3 kids, who now grow up without their mother.

Not that murder is the answer, but if she was illegally in the country, if she was tresspassing, if she was there for some illegal activity then the entire situation could have been avoided if she had just not been there.

Seriously. What a horrible thing to do over what seems like something pretty minor. Now her son is going to spend the rest of his youth in prison and will face all sorts of challenges when he gets out.

I'm of the mind this kid is not going to make it out of jail alive, given his mom's choice of target being named "Garcia". She might as well have given that kid a death sentence.
