Missouri Republicans Vote To Repeal State’s New Paid Sick Leave Law​


Low-wage Missouri workers who just started accruing paid sick days this month are now likely to lose them by the end of August, courtesy of their Republican legislators.

Lawmakers in the state Senate approved a bill last week overturning new sick leave protections that voters had approved by referendum in November 2024. The repeal passed 22-11 over a Democratic filibuster effort, with all but one Republican in support, after already passing the GOP-controlled state House.

Yup, the repuke scumbags in Missouri really do not care if their people die.

This is yet another reason to keep MAGA scum out of office.

What piqued my interest was the legislature overturning the public vote. I don't recall this ever occurring here, so I checked.

A referendum differs from an initiative in that it need be passed at just a single election. Also, referenda passed by Nevada voters cannot be repealed or amended by the legislature. Changes can only be made through another voter referendum or initiative petition.

Can't be done in Nevada. Missouri has some weak laws on repealing referenda.
 
I hope the people the maga folks elected shit all over them, all that pain they wanted for others, is coming home to roost at their house.

Yeah, looks like they have many tricks up their sleeve. Spending allocated funds is another area that needs to be more robust.

Missouri's referendum process is a joke. If the legislature can repeal the vote, the vote is powerless and redundant.

If the legislature can simply repeal another vote, I don't see the point in it. Nevada requires public referenda pass two consecutive sessions, which are biennial. After that, it becomes law and cannot be repealed by the legislature. Each state has its own laws, and some are more populist than others.

The MO legislature also approved a resolution to put repeal of Amendment 3, which codified abortion as a right, to a vote.

I have no problem with legislatures advancing their own initiatives and referenda. I do have a problem when the resolutions seek to repeal the public's vote.

No spin needed. The government should not be deciding what, if any sick leave policy my company uses.

That changes nothing. The government is the enforcer. A majority vote for something doesnt make it wise or just or any less authoritarian than if a congress passed it on its own.
