Military equipment checklist for the paranoid

Hopefully engineering. I'm still working on my degree so it will be a while.

Well, all of western Europe is great for that, but most likely you must be willing to learn the language before you come, unless its Ireland or the UK. Often in some countries like the Netherlands and Spain in particular you can often manage with only English and gradually learn the language. Of those two the Netherlands have tons of jobs and incredibly low unemployment.

But then again, it also comes down to which field you are interested in.. Netherlands would be great for engineering jobs in general. Actually the Netherlands is a pretty great country overall, and Dutch is easy to learn for English speakers, and is a springboard to easily learning German afterwards, or even(but somewhat less) French.

Next time you go out hiking or camping. Try to get one of these and a detailed map. If you use it with your gps you can learn to estimate your distance traveled, and distance to travel to your next point.

Yeah, I never did learn to read a map in the military, only a long time ago in school, and I forgot that.

An Island where I live with 60km diagonal would be a fabulous place to freshen up such skills, and avoid getting completely lost at the same time, yes?

I don't think language will be a problem. I've got lots of practice with various languages just nothing substantial. With immersion and self study it would will work out.

Most everywhere needs engineers. That is why I chose it for my major.

Science majors are a dieing breed in my experience.
My school mostly consists of business management, early childhood education and nursing majors.

I would imagine so considering you could use a gps at the same time for redundancy.
If your wrong on your estimations the gps can correct it.

If you want to try and work in Europe for say a decade, a few years in the Netherlands is a fantastic place to start. It will familiarize your with European "stuff" and language, and is in proximity of the UK, Belgium, Luxembourg, France and Germany, and you can easily go to Scandinavia as well. The country is small, yet they have tons of huge engineering projects going, and tons of interesting engineering stuff to watch..

Ever heard of "deltawerken"?

Thats a fabulous piece of equipment, where do you figure one could get such a suit at a reasonable price?

Any online military store or military surplus store will most likely offer them. Also, you can make your own if money is an issue.

Simply type the following into a search engine:

Ghillie suit + buy + online

or if you want to make your own...

Make your own ghillie suit

Ghillie suits are normally utilized by snipers and special ops units. Depending on the terrain you can tailor fit your suit to it, but this is usually accomplished by making your own. Many of the snipers I knew in the Marines had to make their own ghillie suits, but some of them purchased them instead.

Also, here is a website you might find interesting. It is a naturalist website (I believe) that discusses the ghillie suit in depth. The language is in French but I assume you can read and speak French.

[Camouflage] La ghillie suit, test de terrain

I remember we experimented with this in the army. Especially for the helmet, but also for the jacket, it was difficult as hell to get it right.

I just browsed my two regular shops, but they didnt have it :(

I would prefer chemical engineering but I'm in my first year at the moment.

I know tiny bit of french but I am very familiar with the individual letters and pronunciation. Passive language learning is very powerful in building vocabulary and I've been trying to get some of the pimsluer book chips to listen to at work.

The artificial leaf Ghillie suits look a lot better.

Sorry I don't have a jesus answer, the best advise I can think of in terms of gear is:

-Always keep things with more than one purpose, I.E. multi-tool (duh), GTA 5-2-12 Protractor (get grid azimuths, find 6,8,10 digit grids for rescue, straight edge for distance, etc), 1-Quart metal Canteen cup (cooking, shaving, washing, drinking, ambeer if you're in the country), You get the idea.

-MAPS MAPS MAPS: MARK and RECON useful locations (with overlays or in pencil if necessary) Medical facilities (including vets, their drugs are just as good as ours and they probably won't be manned), high ground for rescue, cleaner water sources, hazard areas (highly populated=danger and risk of robbery) RECON!!! Things are different now then when your maps were made! And take good care of those maps, fold them right, keep them dry, avoid ink use, etc.

-Fishing line and hooks!

-Get a freaking gun! I would say a .22 Ruger just because it won't attract attention when you shoot it if you need to muffle it in an emergency and you can kill just about anything you need to eat with it if you are a good shot. Not to mention the ammo is small light and cheap.

-Your most valuable tool is you, break it and you can't get a new one! Take care of yourself; you can't take care of anyone else if you aren't in shape yourself. Read and Learn as much as possible about EVERYTHING from how to dry meat to how to piece together radios for transmission. All the sexy gear in the world can't help an unresourceful person. Most of all don't freak out if you are lost, stranded, etc. Its not the end of the world EVER, just a little different, if the world ends you won't have to worry cause you won't be around to worry. Hence if you are worried you have nothing to worry about. (does that make sense or is it time for bed for me? lol)

-Lastly people are far more dangerous than nature, I would stick with the later.

That will be all.
